Hello
My name is Carl Wood and I have been a Type 1 Diabetic for over 20 years
I  have been prescribed Gabapentin by the doctors at Hope Hospital to help
my  Diabetic Neuropathy, and basically been told little about it only that
you take it
three times a day and keep uping the dose until you feel it working. If I
take 3-4 tablets on each dose I have felt better than I have felt in Months.
I realise this is a drug prescribed for epilepsy and was looking for some
advice from yourselves who suffer from this condition and may be on this
drug.

Is any body else out there on this medication and are you taking a similar
amount of this drug or am I overdoing it.

Any advice greatly appreciated.
Kind Regards
Carl Wood

Your Chemist should have given you a printout if there were things to
watch for wrt. using it.   OR they might have the Manufacturer's Website
where you could get info. more specific about the med.
**I haven't used it but there have been 1 or 2 people over the past year
who have.  If they're back from Holidays they'll likely post a reply to you
over next couple of days.
In the meantime if you want to look at the North America Ep. Foundation
site, it has a medications glossary -- when you get to it within the e site
I'll list, I think you click onto Medications? then either scroll to the
name or type in the Name Gabapentin then click 'Go' or 'Search'  (the route
there is obvious when you find it).   I think it then gives you a one page
printable report of what the pills are for, how to use them and what to
watch wrt. them.   Check for any things to Not take with them -- many warn
against e.g. Upset stomach meds. etc.   I always show anything I want to buy
to the Same pharmacist who fills my prescriptions, as they have the Scripts
from the Manufacturer about what to avoid.  (e.g. you wouldn't think
Grapefruit might be 'bad' but one of the acids conflicts with absorption of
Tegretol -- another Anti Ep. Drug.  Alcohol has similar effects with many of
the AEDs).
Until someone gets you a better site, try have a look at http://efa.org

I think it is a little bit strange they sent you away with "try this and try
that". The following appears to be a Dutch site (I am from the Netherlands
but as far as I can see it is all written in English):
http://www.medforum.nl/idm/vol_11,_no_5,_1999.htm

Hopefully it helps though it is a bit technical I am affraid.

Hello Carl.

Hope hospital? - sounds like you're in the same general location as me.
Yes, I've been on gabapentin for epilepsy.  Unfortunately, as I
increased the dose, I began to get some side effects. Eventually spent
some considerable time permanently stoned & had to come off it (very
pleasant few months - just like waking up, downing a few pints of
Manchester's finest & topping up at regular intervals!).  Oddly enough,
I have a friend at work who's got the same condition as you & has also
been on gabapentin.  Said much the same as you - felt great & really
reduced the pain she used to get in her extremities.  Again though, she
had to put a limit on it as she began to get similar side effects.  As
with any meds of this nature, different people will react differently.
I'd be interested to know what dose, in mg, you're currently on.

Good luck & festive greetings.

Hi Mike
I live in Macclesfield not far from Salford(Hope Hospital)
I am under their care at the moment as we do not have any Diabetic
consultants in Macclesfield. My current dose is 3x600mg 3 times a day.

All The Best

Not too far then, I'm in Stalybridge (up at the high end).  If I'm
reading you correctly, 3x600x3=5400mg.  That's one hell of a dose. Best
I could ever get to was 2400mg. At this level my wife described me as
having the co-ordination of a Thunderbirds puppet.  Unfortunately, the
side effects showed no sign of easing & the dose wasn't high enough to
make any substantial difference to my seizure pattern, so I came off it.

Anyway, if it works for you, then go with it.  I finally achieved 12
months seizure free in April this year on a different drug combination,
& after 20 years of waiting passed my driving test a couple of weeks ago.

Good luck for the future.

Sounds like good news again then? I am about to achieve 12 months seizure
free in February 2005 and will get my license back mid February 2005.
