[OT-beware of spammers fishing]

Hi gang.  I checked my email today - the account I use only for this
newsgroup.  I was surprised to see that a company I have never used
needed me to click on a link and update my information.  They were very
concerned about a problem with security and wanted to assure me that
this was their solution to keep me "secure".  The company logo was at
the top of the email.  The link they wanted me to click on looked like a
legitimate thing, it had the company name in the link.  But all I had to
do was mouse over the link and it went to a different IP address.  I
checked out the IP address by going to WHOIS with Network Solutions and
found their address is in San Diego, California.  Who knows where they
are really from.   Anyway I sent an email off to the real company with
hopes they will toss the spammer in the slammer.

Just a warning for all of us to be aware of spammers who fish for
information.

Take care,
Julie

yes... its a good reason to mess with your email address. nobody should
use their legitimate addess in posts without using something to foil
spambots... requiring people to spend about 2 seconds to remove the
traps to get the real one.

address@isp.com should be addressIHATESPAMMERS@ispREMOVE.com or
something less obvious.

annoying, and not perfect, but needed unfortuately. In one newsgroup I
use a legitimate yahoo address (no traps allowed since its moderated),
and whoever released one of the swen variants harvested everyones email
from that group and used them as the forged addresses. I still get
bouncebacks about every other day from different isps because of it.

Hello,

Sorry, but what does "OT" means translated in full English?

Anyway, I use a legitimate E-mail address for newsgroupss, buying things
online and stuff. Though I did not yet receive much E-mail on this address,
I expect this to happen shortly. The E-mail address itself is a so-called
alias of my "real" smtp address I registered with my provider. This means I
can retire the address at any times and create a new one at all times. I
also download the E-mails directly into my news client and not with my
"real" mail client (Outlook 2003).

Though it works for me, I can understand that it is not a perfect solution.

It stands for "Off Topic" meaning that the post has nothing to do with
epilepsy or the subect header. Of course, that's no guarantee that a
post is on topic if it doesn't have an OT. :-)

G.    That's what I suspected this earlier post was (below) since it wanted
the 'entire group' to opt- out.   The isp who enabled below has the headers.
I didn't post that here, as not all the readers pick up all the posts or
edit out the ones that look like they're mass mailed or spam.
The 'can spam' compliant etc. (below copy) is Fake as was the from
address and  'promotionsite.net'  implied source.  I xx'd out those parts
below, so I don't accidentally forward their link.   They should be offline
now.
I think the sender was 'offshore'  (i.e. Asia) so they wouldn't care
much about U.S. anti spam etc regulations.  They didn't care where they went
to harvest addresses, why would they care about other than reselling email
links?   /G.
(I don't post any that I see, rarely with this alternate reader since I
resubscribed last Fall.  They still get reported.)

This is a one-time only information.

The enrolled (final) text of S. 877 as it was passed by the Senate on
November 25, 2003, and agreed to by the House of Representatives on
December 8, 2003, allows e-marketers to send UCE as long as the message
contains an opt-out mechanism, a functioning return e-mail address and
the legitimate physical address of the mailer. The bill was signed by
the President on December 16, 2003, and takes effect on January 1, 2004.

Your address isn't in any of our archives, however for Can Spam Act 2003

this is what the new anti-spam standards were supposed to be about, among
other things to be sure that the listed email address (the forged ones)
actually match those in the headers. it almost happened. the most likely
possibility being from microsoft, but in their infinate wisdom, or lack
thereof, they patented the code and would only allow its use under strict
licencing agreements (including end users like us) that were too vague in
many areas. Too many internet providers said they would never use it
because of that, and it was dropped.

I expect then in 2? weeks the New U.S. President will be in a Plane to
get the Troll dens to comply with the U.S. Canspam standard?     I can
hardly wait for that..  where will the louts go to post their junk about
innocent people they've captured, trying to help their civilians?

You don't really in your *wildest dreams expect APNIC or other International
Trolls, Scum or spammers to care about 'new anti-spam standards'  set
anywhere, much less in N.America do you?
Why would the 300th 'Rolex for sale advert.'   start using html or other
code instead of plain text in the last 2 days?  And **who is Buying any of
this junk they supposedly sell?
Show me someone who'd give an unsolicited stranger  their charge card
no. online, and I'll show you someone looking for Identity theft or fraud
against their credit line.   I'd also like to see what a 'genuine replica
Rolex' IS exactly.

I don't know why you'd think  M.soft is to blame-> if they started
discarding all mails that had a listed address different from the Real
Sender, 80% of the posters HERE would get discarded in transit from their
using 'removethis' or 'delete this' within their Email addresses to try keep
the trash out.  M.soft  have no control which other networks the message
bundles are routed through, to get to the Target Addressee or Here -- that's
what makes (made?) the Internet faster and more reliable than sending the
whole message in one large Bucket, wasn't it?

The Identity theft markets (that Julie started this thread with days ago),
are Big Business among crooks and thieves.  We've had 2 or 3 operations
closed here (Canada) in last ~4 months who had equipment to **Manufacture
new Charge Cards, complete with Holograms and imbedded codes from lost or
stolen cards that haven't been De-activated  yet by people not realizing
they had lost their's or that their 'carbons'  (stolen from stores who still
use those in their invoices)   hadn't been shredded before discarding.

Some of above might have changed (wrt. M.soft) -- I can't comment on
whether they do or don't have a monopoly on that.   The *new Windows XP
updates  (Service Pack 2) aren't available now to people who've bought
computers that had been preloaded with Stolen Win.XP-1 software.   How would
I know that?   The store I got this (2nd) system from is gone now,  and
M.soft have spent a *large amount of time helping check some things and
recommending fixes or what has to be **purchased to enable  stuff that won't
work beyond Service Pack 1.
While some of that is Copyright and Income protection, I'm sure the rest
is to close up security issues that get discovered several times a week on
the newer code.    Cost to me will be about $300.  so far as I can tell.
If they're (M.soft) spending this amount of time (20-25 minutes) with
Each customer who emails them about Failing Upgrades to Svc.Pack 2, on their
800 number (Phone Tolls paid by recipient company),  I rate them higher than
most of the Businesses I've dealt with in last 20 years.
Maybe if  'Bill' sees this I'll get a Discount....  *I didn't know about
a Hologram Sticker on outside of **each XP computer, that matches the CD and
Manual (got neither) **registration number that's Same as above Sticker.

But that's geek stuff too so that's why above subject was marked off
topic ...   It's to try help anyone else who might be about to buy a New
Computer with Win.XP so they know what to look for (on the computer case)
before they take it out of the store.        G./

not at all, but if the proposed system followed more of the open standards
requirement (nothing to do with any proposed law), spammers and virus
spreaders at least couldnt hide behind faked addresses and would be easier
to block. The system was to be added to ISP mail servers and all email
programs... so long as the ISPs, the email program/server companies, and
the end users agreed to the ms licencing terms.

but youre right this is getting waaaaaaay off topic ;o)
