The (U.S.) Ep. Foundation of America has a Medications Glossary at http://efa.org . I think you scroll to the medications index, then type in either Carbamazepine (*note N.America spelling) or Tegretol The retard version is similar to our XR or CR (extended release/ controlled release) versions. (I don't know what that second name is behind the 'dash' unless that's just the Manufacturer over there?) I originally used 400mg Tegretol CR each AM and night, after starting in 1994 at lower dose of about 200mg each and adding more each time I had seizures. My use was changed ~1996 to just AM with a second (newer pill) added first at night, then with the AM dose.
Some things I learned or got from my pharmacy (that should be on above site too) -->
Follow the dosing rate the Doctor has set out for AM and night time doses (if you take them 2 times)-> when they do bloodwork they will assume you follow the rate they prescribed, so if you take more or less than recommended dose rate the blood readings will be misleading to them, and they might Raise or Lower your dose, outside of what's right for you. Whenever you Raise or Lower a dose the Dr. should tell you how to do that and it's often done over a period of Days to Weeks to prevent sudden (what I call) 'recoil seizures' -- more on that below.
Take it with Milk, Food or Juice and swallow whole. *Note do *not use Grapefruit Juice or any Juice blends which contain it. One of the acids interferes with absorption of the Tegretol (carbamazepine). Also do not use any upset stomach remedies or other over the counter cold medicines without showing them to the Pharmacist who fills your prescriptions. Some of those contain Alcohol or other chemicals that might interfere with stable blood levels. Note on above paragraph -- alcohol (wine, beer, etc.) has a non-linear footprint with Tegretol. So one drink may seem like 1, 2 like ~4, 3 like ~6? and the alcohol can **Also interfere with your Med. control you achieve. Better to avoid it, or if you get stable levels, some people have used low alcohol drinks on occasion. *I don't.
Do *not stop taking it abruptly, and only change doses on advice of your Doctor or with their supervision. Abrupt stopping risks producing (what I call) 'recoil seizures', where the effect might be stronger than if you weren't using any medications at all.
**Some people may experience effects on calcium levels that might affect bones etc. This usually would show up First in your teeth. So my Medication script said to tell all *Doctors and *Dentists that I'm using it. My Dentist changed my checkup rate from each 6 months to each *4. Since 1994 I haven't had any problems with it, once I got to a stable dose level that worked and stopped using juices from time to time like I listed above (grapefruit). I found it a Stable, Reliable control for Complex Partial (Temporal Lobe) seizures, and have been using it since then. If you have trouble finding information on that link above, reply here or email me and I'll see if I can find the other websites I once had on Tegretol (it *may not be in this computer). Your Pharmacist may also have the Manufacturer's website too, if you want more than efa has .
I found things to avoid etc. on the efa site, in more detail than the 1-page I got from my Pharmacy, but the latter had the instructions of what to avoid and how to use it. (They added grapefruit after I took the efa. printout, showing that there should have been an advisory about that.) / G.

I'm just kidding you of course. Gaross has covered most of this pretty well. You're just getting a 300mg controlled release version of the drug and it's the same as anything you would get in Canada or the US. The rest is simply the name of the German manufacturer.
For information in English, go to http://www.rxlist.com/ to do a lookup and/or to http://www.epilepsy.com/sitemap/map_medicine_available.html
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Each of us is different, with respect to body weight, metabolism, and degree of seizures, but you are using 300mg as Bob detected (below). For comparison at 150 lbs (70Kg) and my type of Complex Partial seizures I started at 200mg *each AM and *each Night (total 400), and slowly increased with more seizures to 400mg each AM and each night (800mg per day). Beyond that dose, with seizures still, my Dr. slowly removed night dose (over about 6 weeks) and added a second (different) tablet. But I still use Tegretol (Carbamazepine) CR with the morning dose (400mg total).
(If your's are solid e.g. 200mg tabs like mine, there's a slot across the centre so it can be snapped in 2 to make 100mg. Another version uses Powder inside a 'plastic hollow tube' that can't be divided like that. I found I could swallow the whole tabs easily with Apple or Apple/Peach juice we can get here in Canada. Then I'd follow with Breakfast in the AM. The night dose - when I used it - I only needed about half a cup of juice. ) One of the sites (possibly one that Bob listed below, or on efa.org site), showed actual Pictures of the tablets. That can be handy as the Solid ones are a different Colour for each mg dose size. That's why I mentioned my 200 mg ones are pale orange. It also helps prevent dose mix-ups at home or in hospitals. Here's hoping that you found information that you were comfortable with from the leads that Mary, Gaross, & I gave you. Please let us know as there is more info out there plus people here who use carbamazapine/Carbatrol/Tegretol. Please also accept my apologies for my clumsy attempt at ironic humor. In retrospect, it wasn't very funny.

Kennethimpey - 10 Nov 2004 08:21 GMT Hi All Hey Bob keine angst I can speak and read a little Geman but this subject is totally new to me. Thank all for the replies, I'm sure I'll find what I want from the site you have given me. A question re: dosage my weight is about 70 kgs. and I am not an expert on Epilepsy my 2 seizures, I think are called grand mal I go completely out and have been taken to Hospital both times I soil my trousers, and my girlfriend tells me I spit and my shirt is wet. They last about 15/20 minutes I think, is this the reason why I have to take 2 tablets per day. My doctor is good but in our small village I don't think he see's Epilepsy patients everyday. And you guys and girls have a lot more actual experience with the problem. Thanks In Advance Kenny

They last about 15/20 minutes I think, Yes, those sound exactly like they were grand mal seizures. They are also known as "tonic-clonic" seizures which is a newer term for them. Have you only had those 2 in your whole life? Have you had any mild type of seizures before that?
Those seizures are often triggered if a person has been going without enough sleep at the time and/or has been consuming alcoholic beverages. There are other triggers.
> is > this the reason why I have to take 2 tablets per day. The reason for taking 2 at different times, if that's what you do, is to even out the drug level in your system since it becomes lower as time passes and needs to be renewed. See http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/medicine_dosage.html for a discussion of that.
The 2X300mg for a total of 600mg/day would be somewhat of a starting dose and would be increased if it's not enough to control the seizures. A switch to another drug or the addition of another drug is possible to help control seizures.
> My doctor is good but in > our small village I don't think he see's Epilepsy patients everyday. And you > guys and girls have a lot more actual experience with the problem. Has that doctor had any tests run on you? It's pretty standard to run an EEG, MRI, & CT-Scan in situations such as yours. An EEG records the brainwaves so that the wave patterns can be looked at for certain indicators of epilepsy and for the responsible location in the brain. The MRI & CT-Scans give pictures of the brain, somewhat like an X-ray, that can be analysed for any form of brain damage or tumor. The doctor should be sending you to a hospital that conducts such tests if he hasn't done so already.
There are a lot of people here who have grand mals and who take Tegretol, so you'll probably hear from them here.
Good luck!

And you > guys and girls have a lot more actual experience with the problem. > Thanks In Advance > Kenny You could check the telephone book in your area and see if there might be a Local Chapter of an Epilepsy Association. Sometimes they have websites too, but also if one were nearby some (like mine in Toronto Canada) have Monthly Drop in sessions, and an Annual Convention where they have guest speakers -- something you might find of interest if it were available nearby. If your Dr. is the one prescribing the medications he might know of a Webaddress if another site were further away from you (heck, that Pharmacy where you get your Pills might even know). That would be another site too if you wanted some contacts nearby. Most of us are still around most days though too, but I've seen a few interesting talks wrt. research, life style issues and legal issues -- things like that before I was online. And on some things, like the legal issues, those might vary depending on the Country or State involved for some things. Those are where a local website might be of some use too. G./
