I have a word document which is a composite of a lot of information I have
found regarding the effects of aspartame / phenylalanine (contained in
artificial sweeteners) on people with various ailments.

As for myself, I have found that they have a PROFOUND effect on my seizures.
Eating sweets containing artificial sweeteners causes me to have extremely
violent cluster seizures.

Anyone interested in a little light reading on the subject can email me on
darryl.gaye@paradise.net.nz and I will send you this document for your
perusal.

Cheers.

How interesting! My daughter has been off Aspartame for about 9 months and
free of all the strange dizzy, sick, fainting problems she previously had.
I KNOW that it was aspartame that caused her problems. Now my husband has
had 2 seizures out of the blue -and I DID wonder if he had been having too
much aspartame, but dismissed it, as I felt perhaps I was being paranoid!
Now I am DEFINATELY going to get rid of every single trace of the blessed
stuff -it is in EVERY lemonade in England, and almost all chewing gums,
childrens vitamin tablets, brearth freshener squares, and obviously every
sugar free pudding, and sweets.
There is a lot of frightening information on the net about this stuff -and
I don't understand why it is allowed to be in all our foodstuffs. Bring
back sugar, and honey and natural sweet ingredients.
Thanks Darryl, for bringing this to folks attention. I spread the word
here in England all the time!

The following was posted in April, 2001 by an AOL user under
"ASPARATAME Users Beware". I had already stopped using any diet
products b/c I suspected it was triggering my seizures- even things
such as sugar-free cough drops or mints! I enjoyed Diet Coke and was
using it b/c of weight problems, knowing how regular sodas are nothing
but sugar & calories. Relatives of mine in the health industry said I was
full of BS, wrong, etc. But I saved the post just for this reason.
-----------------
I know there have been a lot of posts about the dangers of aspartame but
after reading this, I thought it important to share with you.

"Aspartame" marketed as 'NutraSweet', 'Equal', and 'Spoonful'.  In the
keynote address by the EPA, they announced that there was an epidemic of
multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus, and they did not understand what
toxin was causing this to be rampant across the United States.  I explained
that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.

When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degreesF, the wood
alcohol in Aspartame converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid
which in turn causes metabolic acidosis.  (Formic acid is the poison found
in the sting of fire ants).  The methanol toxicity mimics multiple
sclerosis
in error.  The multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, where methanol
toxicity is.

In the case of systemic lupus, we are finding it has become almost as
rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi
drinkers.

Also with methanol toxicity, the victims usually drink three to four
12oz. cans of them per day, some even more.  In the cases of systemic
lupus, which is triggered aby Aspartame, the victim usually does not
know that the aspartame is the culprit . The victim continues its use,
aggravating the pupus to such a degree, that sometimes it becomes
life-threatening.  When we get people off the aspartame, those with
systemic lupus usually become symptomatic. Unfortunately, we cannot
reverse this disease.

On the other hand in the case of those diagnosed with MS, when in
reality, the disease is methanol toxicity most of the symptoms disappear.
We have seen cases where their vision has returned and even their
hearing has returned. This also applies to cases of tinnitus.

During a lecture I said, "if you are using Aspartame, NutraSweet, Equal,
Spoonful, etc.) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting
pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches,
tinnitus, joint pain, depression, anxiety attacks slurred speech, blurred
vision, or memory loss, you probably have Aspartame Disease."

Aspartame changes the brain's chemistry.  It is the reason for severe
seizures. This drug changes the dopamine level in the brain imagine what
this drug does to patients  suffering from Parkinson's Disease.  This drug
also causes Birth Defects.

There is absolutely no reason to take this product.  It is NOT a diet
product!  The Congressional record said "It makes you crave carbohydrates
and will make you FAT".  Dr. Roberts stated that when he got patients off
aspartame, their average weight loss was 19 pounds per person.  The
formaldehyde stores in the fat cells, particularly in the thighs..."

The article goes on to say..."I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator
of Aspartame knows how deadly it is.  They fund the American Diabetes
Association, American Dietetic Association,  Congress, and the Conference
of the American College of Physicians.  The New York Times on Nov. 15,
1996 ran a article on how the American Dietetic Association takes money
from the food industry to endorse their products.

Therefore, they cannot criticize any additives or tell about their
link to Monsanto.  How bad is this?  We told a mother who had a child on
NutraSweet, to get off the product.  The child was having grand mal
seizures every day. The mother called her physician, who called the ADA
who told the doctor not to take the child off the NutraSweet. We are still
trying to convince the mother that the aspartame is causing the seizures.

Every time we get someone off of aspartame, the seizures stop. If
the baby dies you know whose fault it is, and what we are up against.
There are 92 documented symptoms of aspartame, from coma to death.
The majority of them are all neurological, because the aspartame destroys
the nervous system. ....

The article is quite lengthy and goes on to blame Gulf War Syndrome
on Aspartame as cases of Diet Soda were stored out in the scorching desert
heat and turned the aspartame more deadly.

After reading the article, there was no question in my mind that
aspartame should be avoided at all costs.

I believe the article was by Dr. H.J. Roberts, a diabetic
specialist and world expert on aspartame poisoning.  It also refers to Dr.
Russell Blaylock, author of EXCITOTOXINS, THE TASTE THAT KILLS.

I've been looking through the scientific literature on aspartame and
seizures and it seems pretty clear to me that aspartame does not induce
seizures or lower seizure threshold in animal epilepsy models and does not
lower seizure threshold in humans.  Yet, the controversy continues.  I'd be
very interested to see the literature you've acquired to compare it with
what I've found.  I'd like to compare the methodology just to satisfy my
curiosity.  Can you email me a copy?  I've sent a copy of this to the
address you provided.

Thanks.

I was told long ago to stay away from the stuff. I dont know how valid
the idea is, but its not like telling someone to stay away from water.

Have you found it's made any improvements since staying away from it?

hangover symptoms from methanol from dark wines and liquors or 11% methanol
part of aspartame, review of research: Jones AW 1988:  Murray 2004.10.23
rmforall

Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol --  1,120 mg aspartame  in 2 L diet soda,
almost six 12-oz cans,  gives 123 mg methanol (wood alcohol).   However,
about 30% of the methanol remains in the body as cumulative durable toxic
metabolites of formaldehyde and formic acid, 37 mg daily, a gram every
month, accumulating in and affecting every tissue -- over 60 times the USA
EPA limit for formaldehyde in drinking water.

Aspartame is made of phenylalanine (50% by weight) and aspartic acid (39%),
both ordinary amino acids, bound loosely together by methanol (wood alcohol,
11%).   Similar amounts of methanol in many fruits and vegetables, locked up
in complex pectin molecules, and always paired with ethanol, its natural
antidote, are not usually released by human digestion and so are harmless.
But the readily released methanol from aspartame is within hours largely
turned by the liver into formaldehyde and then formic acid, both potent,
cumulative toxins.

Red wine contains twice as much methanol as does diet soda as an impurity,
about one part in ten thousand.  It is the natural conversion by the body of
this methanol into formaldehyde and formic acid that is the main cause of
the well known "morning after" hangover symptoms: headache, nausea,
weakness, impaired memory, irritability, anxiety, "brain fog", body pains --
the same symptoms as aspartame victims.

" But higher blood-methanol concentrations are definitely associated with

J.A. Oppermann's Searle Co. lab  proved that 30% of the methanol in
aspartame fed once to monkeys remained --  surely as formaldehyde and formic
acid in all tissues (1973, 1976, 1979).

This was confirmed by an expert team at the University of Barcelona (Trocho
C, Alemany M, et al, 1998):  " ...the binding of methanol-derived carbon [
from low levels of aspartame fed to rats for 10 days ] to tissue proteins
was widespread, affecting all systems, fully reaching even sensitive targets
such as the brain and retina...These are indeed extremely high levels for
adducts of formaldehyde, a substance responsible for chronic deleterious
