Flour, sugar, and seizures

Does anyone have any non-biased links on the subject of flour/sugars impact
on seizures?  The hits I got on google all seemed to involve a health food
store or doctor trying to sell his book.  Personally I see a connection
between overeating foods rich in refined flour/sugar (such as corn chips,
snack crackers, and pizza) and indicence of seizures but need some
scientific evidence before I give up my vices :-(

Howdy Bill!

I don't know of any...

Sounds like somebody is leaving out a few steps in their deductive reasoning
there. The only association that I can think of would be that flour & sugar
can effect the amount of glucose in the blood.

Low blood sugar can cause shaking (as opposed to seizures) -- I know 'cuz I
also have diabetes!

High or low blood sugar MIGHT be a seizure trigger in some cases.

If, as I suspect, the latter is the case - than somebody is attempting to
sell  some snake oil...

Although flour and sugar can increase blood sugars, they are not the ONLY
things that can have the same effect.

You're right, as always.

Snake oil is a sure trigger.

For the Dutch folkes / not native English speaking community out there: this
is an English expression. Had to load it into my Babylon online software
dictionary to have it translated correctly. Without that dictionary, I would
have killed my personal snake collection within seconds!

Cheers,

Howdy Marco!

For the folks whose primary language is not English.

"snake oil" - an expression from patent medicine. Snake oil was one of the
many "secret ingredients" that went into cure-all miracle medicines that
people used to sell while traveling from town to town.

Snake oil may sound impressive but it has absolutely no proven theraputic
value.

Mary you are such a clown  :-)

However, I have always found low blood sugar to be a certain trigger for my
seizures.
Snake oil on the other hand, I can drink by the gallon.

Going rate per gallon of snake oil is two lucky rabbits feet, four hens
teeth and a left rear tyre from an Edsel.
But I'm prepared to negotiate.....

Hmm. Only have two hens and they have the required complement of dentition.
You'll have to up the lucky rabbits ... but Spouse is short of a left handed
hammer ...

So did I - that's why I asked. Pondering over the problem in the long dark
hours of the night I realised that you must use snake oil in your Edsel. We
don't - but daily cod liver oil helps (I'm persuaded) with my personal rusty
parts.

I find that if I use my personal parts often enough they tend not to become
rusted, though a regular application of oil feels good.

Topical application of snake oil? Never heard of that. Doesn't it make the
bed slimy? I prefer talc ...

In my case it's the internal joints which need lubrication. The outside bits
are in perfect working order. Sweetie :-)

Isn't thai food something to do with combining bondage and
eating.......however, that could be a seizure trigger as well (just trying
to keep with the epilepsy subject matter, so I don't get in trouble with the
administration).

It's a bit late for strawberries but daughter-in-law is a splendid cook and
a chocoholic to boot so really good chocolate cake is no problem.

She's a Scot so wouldn't use anything as expensive as snake oil in her
recipes ...

Hi Bill!

Actually there is a definitive link which forms the basis for the Ketogenic Diet.  The basic principle is simple, during a state of fasting seizures of all types are dramatically reduced as the body burns fats as a source of energy vs the usual carbohydrates.  This in turn produces ketone bodies which are known to control seizures.  The Ketogenic Diet mimics the fasting state and is composed of mainly fats (buttter, cream, oil, mayonnaise), almost no carbs and just enough protein to sustain growth.  It has been used primarily on kids (1 yr - 17 yrs) with difficult to control seizures and can actually cause the children to be seizure and med free after 2 years.  60-70% of the children on the diet have had at least some control of their seizures.  Not all doctors recognize the treatment and it is very difficult to maintain as the diet is extremely strict.

Our 23 month old daughter has been on the diet for 6 days and her seizures are reduced 90% thus far; she has gone from 20-30 seizures/day to 2-4.

Thanks for the info Carl!  I'd heard about the Ketogenic diet before but not in such great detail.
