Long time lurker first time poster. Was wondering if anyone has had any
experience quitting smoking and having more siezures. I haven't had a
siezure for about a year and a half.
Grand mal that is. I've had other types but no major ones. Anyway any
help would be appreciated. I take Topamax 200mg twice a day. Thank you.

I use Tegretol and Clobazam for Complex Partial (Temporal Lobe) seizures,
and just quit for about the 3rd time....
I quit the first time last year (about this time) when we went to Hawaii.
Since the 2x 4-hour Air Flights were non-smoking, plus the 5 hour layover
as we switched airlines in Vancouver, I had mostly quit when we arrived,
and didn't buy any 'U.S.' cigarettes while we were there for ~7 days.
(Because of wife's work schedule we couldn't stay longer in late Sept. to
see the Real Countryside. Bride and Groom are back there now celebrating
their 1st anniversary -- that's how I 'recall' the approximate date. )
I quit a Second time for between 6-8 weeks about June, and the 3rd time
just started last ~Thursday. I was told to expect to have to Do it more
than **Once, and not beat oneself up if we slip, a time or two, since that
only adds stress, therefore desire for a 'fix' therefore Off the Wagon and
back to start...
I Also use an over-the-counter anti-smoking gum that the pharmacies carry
here (Canada), that I've had mixed results with. My Family Dr. said that
Ordinary Gum or anything to keep our mouth busy would likely work as well as
the Medicated one. But when our brain gets e.g. Caffeine (from Coffee or
some teas) there's also a cross- addiction that gets triggered if we're
used to having the Tobacco and Coffee together. I had already asked my
Pharmacy (where I get my Tegretol and Frisium filled), if there was any
contra-indications between the Nicorette and my Pills to make sure that One
doesn't interfere with the Other. I didn't want to lose the Seizure
control as part of my 'cure'.
So far as possible if you can reduce the caffeine (even in Half) during
the **first 2-4 weeks, I found at try no. 2, that helped Not have any
rough spots as my body adapted to cleaner air and loss of a 'hobby'... It
is really dumb, AND an Addiction, but I still miss it from time to time when
I used to have one. And That's even after I haven't smoked Indoors since
my Seizure Onset in 1993/4 (My early seizures before control used to
involve Absences so my Neuro suggested I go outdoors, in case I was 'away'
while indoors at onset. Ever stood outdoors in -30 F wondering what
Other Hobbies call for this kind of exposure ?? :-< G./

You could always try a pinch of snuff!
(See the Snuff page on my site.)

I heard a good way to quit beer was to drink three bottles of wine a
day.
I really don't need a substitute for cigs. I just want to know if going
cold turkey might cause siezures.
As far as snuff and the like goes never really liked the stuff.
Can't afford a trip to Hawaii either.
I have some strange dreams myself. Thanks anyway.

Quit smoking over 8 years ago. At the time was only on tegretol.
Seizures weren't fully controlled, but were mainly complex partials,
very seldom had 'big ones'. Had hypnotherapy to help me quit & went
from 30/day to zero overnight. Felt great until about a week later &
then had 2 grand mal seizures a few days apart. Doc reckoned that the
nicotine withdrawal was most likely cause - after all, it's a very
powerful drug & the sort of sudden withdrawal I went through can produce
some very powerful effects.
Didn't go back to smoking though. Probably the best decision I ever made.
Good luck.

Howdy!
Quitting cold turkey didn't cause any problems for me in the seizure
department!
A lot of people ARE discovering nasal snuff as an alternative or using it as
a method to quit these days. For a light to moderate user about $3 worth of
snuff (5 - 10 g depending on what type you use) may last a week or more!

Howdy !
DRY snuff m'lad.
Take a pinch and take a sniff! (Snuffers either "sniff" or "snuff" -- we
don't "snort"!)
I've been looking for the correct medical terminology here...
To be taken 'olfactorially'(?)
It's great stuff. Doesn't cause cancer, clears the sinuses, prevents hay
fever and other alergies, no fire hazards (remind me to show you my
cigarette burns sometime), no second hand smoke and (best of all) you don't
have to leave the room to satisfy your vice.
Why heck... my favorite spot is right under the "NO SMOKING" sign where I
can laugh at everybody stomping the snow off of their feet after coming in
after having a smoke.
I even take snuff with the blessings of my ear nose & throat doctor!

"Nasally".
When I quit I had more seizures for the first 2-3 weeks. IMHO, any kind of
withdrawal (or for that matter, anything that causes physical or emotional
stress) increases the likelihood of seizures.
