I take carbamazepine (Tegretol) and one of  the side effects is pain in my
knees.

I'm prepared to put up with it, but does anyone know whether it causes long
term damage to the joints. My doctors don't seem to know!

Thanks in advance.

I can't find anything on the bookmarks I had on medications or tegretol from
the manufacturer site (I've used it since 1995).  You could ask the
Pharmacist if they have any  'new' information,  if they're easier to reach
than a Doctor.    You might find these 2 sites of interest regarding
Tegretol (I found them under Microsoft news search) -->

http://www.drugs.com/tegretol.html

http://www.healthsquare.com/newn/teg1430.htm

I *think it was down the Second multi page scroll that there's a fairly
large section with the Title "Why should this drug not be prescribed" -- and
lists some possible side effects, including "Risks of bone marrow
depression".   I don't know if Those might lead to what you're experiencing/
asking about above,  but that was the only part where I found anything close
to 'long term joints' you asked about at top.      G./

Really useful sites, thanks very much. Most helpful references to joint pain
that I've seen so far.

I took Tegretol for 15 years and all I ever experienced was a TMJ
(temporomandibular joint) problem.  After medication the swelling went
down, but now I have a permanent problem of my right TMJ snapping (a
popping sound, like snapping your fingers) every time I open my jaws
all of the way.

I've been on Tegretol for about 2 years, but since adding Clobazam to it
I've noticed the jaw popping when I open my mouth too wide.

I've had that for many years, well before there were any signs of epilepsy
and I've never been on Tegretol.

It's one of my party tricks :-)

If you have a Dr. appointment scheduled sometime, does he already know about
this?  For the first ~2 years I took Tegretol (and 2 on Dilantin before
that), I had regular bloodwork about each 3 months.  I think some of the
test was to see if the Med. was at the correct level, since some people
flush it out more quickly than others, *but it was also to check that the
Tegretol wasn't attacking Calcium? so might affect Bones and Teeth.
(My prescription said to tell all Drs. and Dentists I was using Tegretol.
When I told my dentist, he changed my recall from each 6 months to each 4.
I think that was because any Calcium problems might show up first in our
teeth before they're apparent elsewhere.)     I wondered if some of above
might be an indication that the Calcium effects were involved.
Another place where joint pain might arise is if you might be having
seizures during the Night, but not waking up during a minor event.    (In
other words do many of above seem to be there in the Mornings?  or can the
joint pain you described show up at other times during the day?  If it's
only in the mornings the night time medication level might be wearing off
before morning.  )     G./
