clobazam and alcohol

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share my experience.
I'm on Tegretol, 1000mg/day, and about a month ago started taking Clobazam,
10 mg/day. Last Saturday I had about half a glass of beer, which I've done
in the past (before starting Clobazam) with no problems. I found myself
getting quite intoxicated from it very quickly, and even the next day I
still felt it. The day after that (Monday) I had all the symptoms of a
hangover - headache, nausea, etc. I can only guess that the Clobazam, as
well as intensifying the effects of the alcohol, slows down the process of
it getting metabolized and eliminated.
Has anyone else had this happen?

I couldn't find my Write-up I got when I filled my First Prescription ~1996
(for Frisium).
Did you look at the Medications Glossary under http://efa.org  (? I think
that's the address to Ep. Foundation of America -- there's a Medications
Glossary somewhere in there.)    It was scanning down what they had on
*Tegretol that I found the comment about it getting messed up by Grapefruit
Juice, before my own Pharmacist told me.

*Tegretol is supposed to have a 'non-linear footprint' with Alcohol where
1 drink can seem like 1, 2 like e.g. 2.8, 3 like 4.2 etc...   At peak I was
only at 2x 400mg per day of Tegretol, but rarely used any alcohol because I
didn't want to lose the Tegretol control.
(I currently use 1x400mg Tegretol CR per day BUT take 10mg Frisium
(Clobazam)  AM and Night time...  You're using 1000mg Tegretol above, so I
don't know how the extra Frisium mixed with it would behave -- we cut my
Tegretol in half when I started adding Frisium (Clobazam) to my daily dose.
Also, if you can't find much under efa or from replies here, your Pharmacist
might be able to tell you how the 2 interact -- they often get the Scripts
and might interpret them more often than some Doctors have time to.  )

If you can't find the printable page at efa, let me know and I'll try look
it up.  If you get your prescriptions at Shopper's Drug Mart in Canada,
they're supposed to give you (paper) printout with 1st  Filling of
Prescriptions-that's where I first found some of above stuff on Alcohol,
although the Non-linear part I think I got 'here', or at efa.org site.
Also, may not work, but if it can't find Clobazam  (it should), you could
try the Canada brand name Frisium  in case it's sorted under that, but I
think the first name was where I looked to see how the efa report compared
to what I had from my Pharmacist.    G./

Thanks GR. I got a printout when I first filled my Clobazam rx, but all it
said was "no alcohol". They don't usually go into details about why.

Most everything says no alcohol nowdays. But yea it would be more helpful
to at least know what would happen if someone did, as all drugs react
differently.

Well, now I know, and I'll know better next time...

Not so much that, but the pharmacies take a 'better safe than sorry
approach'. Details are not important. The way these warnings are put on
everything it makes it sound as if alcohol interacts with everything.
Instead of thinking 'well its ok here, but not here', they err on the side
of caution... as they should. Depending on the drug, the amount of
alcohol, and of course your own body the effect it has will vary widely.
But then again, no pharmacy told me to watch out for grapefruit juice when
taking tegretol, so go figure.

I used to take 800-1000mg of Tegretol daily in the mid-eighties.  I
could drink one 12 oz. beer with no problem.  It was the second beer
that would trigger a severe seizure.  Now I haven't had a drink since
August of 1987.  Tegretol would multiply the effects of alchohol many
times and one tall-boy (16 oz.) would give me a buzz.

A neurologist I had many years ago simply said: "Anybody can drink one
beer.  Two beers can kill someone with epilepsy."
