Every time I try to access google from my new e-mail address, it tries
to charge me for the search or it just won't work right. I have no idea
what the problem is. That is why I posted for people here who want to
keep in contact to start e-mailing me at the new e-mail address.

My stupid computer's modem just died. LOL - what luck, huh? It is
going to take a week or so to get a new one and install it. So, this
e-mail is going to be up until the end of October since I will have to
pay for it before I can get the other one running. Need to e-mail -
send it here for now.
Instead of one-liners, maybe you could expand for her, to tell her how she
accesses and posts on the group, once she had Webtv (Her ISP?) removed.
In other words she might still have an Email? (I'm guessing) account but
thinks that without the other Webtv features she can't access the group.
Some of the service providers in N.America now offer an Internet Light etc.
that might let you Email and possibly read e.g. Microsoft homepage, but Not
allow connections to the rest of the internet. I don't know which O.S. or
programs/computer she uses other than that Webtv reference.
*IF you know how she can, why not post it here? I'm sure there are
**others Reading this group who'd like to participate but don't know how to
do that. (I know that might sound 'off topic' but before the OTPolice
swoop in, I get 3-4 emails a month from people who find Posts on e.g. Deja
Vu or Ep. Medications and write *me for help, since they don't realize
there's a **Newsgroup they can be Part Of, if they find it and
Subscribe. )
So if it's not too complicated for her to keep access to the group, why
not tell her how? Thanx. G./

true true
ok... most ISPs have usenet newsgroup access that do not require the use
of the www, or a web browser. One option would be to configure outlook
express by entering the ISPs news server name (news.isp.com or something
like that), download the names of all the groups (many many 1000s), and
from that list pick and choose the ones you want to 'suscribe to', in the
sense that the program will keep only these names near the inbox/outbook
and keep the master list elsewhere.
Heres an MS link for outlook express news (and some other things). The MS
link wraps on the page so this tinyurl is used instead.

The program that I like to use is Xnews. Its free and its a dedicated
newsgroup reader thats easier to use. No html formatting tho... which I
dont really like anyway.

btw... google groups is really just www access to usenet groups. Usenet
does not require the www or an email address (I dunno about google). As
you can see mine is fake to spoof spambots, which took a yahoo address of
mine from another group and caused no end of hastle.
What you need:
computer with simple internet access (www not needed)
newsgroup access (which is usually standard)
newsgroup servername (usually news.yourisp.com)
username (usually same one used to access email server)
password (if needed, usually same one used to access email server)
and one of the two programs mentioned above, or one like it.
Once set up, send a couple test posts either here if nobody minds (there
are some sticklers about that in various groups), or go to alt.test and
try there.

note: since it seems you are on AOL, they probably have their own
newsreader, web based Im sure. If they did not give you the access
information for newsgroups to use your own reader, they can provide it.
This is the one page I found as several things seem to be blocked off to
non-aol users, so they do support it.

Thank you. Well done, and I hope that helps her. She was concerned she
might 'lose us' if she had to move off the provider she currently used, and
I thought *someone could show her how to stay among us. Again, thank you.

Dawn, did that help you? If not, what system are you going to be using for the
internet? Will you be accessing your email using a microsoft product such as
outlook? Or are you using AOL? I'm afraid I haven't used AOL too much myself.
Take care,
Julie
