I will try to make this brief.  My husband had his 1st gran mal szr(all
nocturnal)when he was 23(lst yr married); 2nd ,25yr,when our first child
was born; 3rd, 28 yrs, sold business stiffed $$$; 4th, 34 yrs., building
house and reestablish business in new area. As you can see all stress
related. Now, he is 44 yrs old and has not had a gran mal szr in 10 yrs. -
med free 8 yrs.  About 2 yrs ago his cheeks would swell - went to FP
diagnose: sinus infect prescribe penicillen.  This has been continuous for
about 2 yrs. we even went to a Dentist diagnose: sinus infect - back to
FP.  Recently he went to an alergist we explained my husband has been
experiencing episodes: He understands what is being said but has a pale
look in his face, he looks at his right arm and moves his fingers in the
palm of his hand as if his hand is tingling, and smacks his lips together
like his mouth is dry, he is foggy less than a minute and can tell me what
I was saying but cannot really communicate back to me at that time.  We
now are seeing an EN & T dr. who did a CT scan dianose: sever sinus infect
and cyst. needs to stay on Augmentin for up to six weeks.  Has anyone
experienced this?  symptoms from sinus or szr related?

At top here is a partial message I posted here about 3 months ago.   Go to
the Top (no.2 http AFTER 'gaross wrote' )  of 2 First Aid for Seizures
Pages, that Julie put up for the Idaho Epilepsy Website.
Specifically look down the "Symptoms" for the various seizure types  that
reference the Lip Smacking you describe below.   (You might also want to
print that page for reference unless your memory is better than mine.)

Look at SIMPLE PARTIAL and ABSENCE  TYPE Seizures among possibly some
others, although you said he didn't lose Consciousness (as is common on some
of the other types of seizures. )       G.   ( I added 2x ***s below)

Here is the older post -->

Thanks G.R. for keeping people informed.

There's a Second topic added about 4? months ago that goes more into First

information on kids newly diagnosed? (I think) and general questions that
others might ask, or those newly diagnosed.    If there's no link there to a

within http://efa.org   .        G./

I scanned down the First Aid chart mentioned on earlier post.    Some of the
"random activities" and lip smacking type gestures are also possible under
***Complex Partial Seizure type listed,  but until controlled (usually by
medications), C.P. seizures often end? in **loss of consciousness at end--
not just Loss of Awareness of surroundings, but Drop Down Passing out.
(That's the type I have, and the only way I'm aware of what I did while I
was in 'The Twilight Zone'  was from  people around me telling me what I
did.   Is your Husband AWARE of you and his surroundings while he's
away'??  )

ALSO someone else here might have more experience with this.  If he used
to have Grand Mal seizures (part of your note I left below) --> those Might
have progressed or changed to 'just'   Complex Partial or Simple Partial
Seizure types.

I'd still like him to be referred to a **Neurologist unless that's who
interpreted the tests you described earlier (Below).  This can be fixed
**SO much easier (I'd suggest)    if you get the Right Specialist to do the
Interpreting for you....     (A weak analogy -- if your car's engine has a
Pinging, you don't take it to a Boating shop or a Motor Bike shop to get it
looked after...)   G./           <BELOW IS ALL REPEAT OF OLDER POST just for

It sounds to me like your hubby is having problems with sinus infections, the
infections are triggering seizures.  I used to have sinus infections until my
doctor prescribed allergy medications.

If I do get sick with a cold or flu, or sinus infection I know that it is time
to rest and I make it a point not to drive when I am sick.  Another problem is
taking over the counter medications.  These can lower a person's seizure
threshhold.

Take care,
Julie

Thank u. I am looking for a direction. My husband goes back to the dr. Sept
9 (ENT) He has had this sinus infection for 2 yrs. The Augmentin does not
seem to be working - this is his third time taking Augmentin this summer.
1st dose 14 days, 2nd dose 7 days, 3rd 14 days, and he can still feel
sinus pressure every once in a while. Julie, how long does this usually
last for you? and please tell me a little about what it is you personally
experience.  Again, that you everyone.  I am printing this info. and
taking it to the dr. with us.

I would say your husband needs medical treatment for 2 things.
(1.)  The sinus infections - it sounds like the augmentin is not working.  Is
there a stronger drug the doctor can diagnose for sinus infections?  Once the
infection is cleared up can your husband be put on allergy medications so he
doesn't develop sinus infections in the future.  I take Allegra and a nasal
spray Astelin - these are both to keep my allergies in check, which in turn
stop a secondary infection (sinus infection).  I take the meds daily.

(2.)  Your hubby needs to see a neurologist about getting his seizure disorder
under control.  He is having a seizure.  See this chart
http://www.epilepsyidaho.org/seizure.htm
Do any of the symptoms seem familiar?  There are many different types of
seizures and people can have more than one type of seizure.

You asked about my personal experience.  I have had epilepsy since I was a
teenager.  I have tonic clonic seizures (grand mal) but I have experienced
other types of seizures which include a strange feeling, deja vu feeling,
extreme anxiety.  My seizures are under control now, I take medication for
epilepsy daily, I watch what I eat and pay attention to how I am feeling.

As far as how long the sinus problem lasted, It probably depends on how severe
the infection became.  I remember one time I went to the doctor feeling like I
was going to die.  He looked at me and said there was not an infection.  But I
told him I felt like I was going to die.  He said "I believe you".  Then he
told me to try the Astelin.  He gave me a sample in the doctor's office.
Before my husband got me to the house I noticed a big difference.  My head
began to drain.  The doctor also changed my medication from claritin to
allegra.  That seemed to be what I needed to clear up my head and take the
pressure off my sinus.

I am not saying that the sinus infection caused my seizures.  It is just a
contributing factor.  The same way a cold or flu might contribute to how I am
feeling.  When I was a teen I had seizures during the time of my period, but I
think that was more related to hormones.

Let us know how things go for your hubby.

This makes sense,  and would also explain why they'd do a CT Scan
(Computerized Tomography --heat-type scan?-- usually looking for brain
damage, problems), to assess his Sinus condition.   G.

Just my experience to share.  I had a pituitary tumor removed in July
of '98.  They had to cut through the back of my sinuses to access the
pituitary gland.  They sewed a plastic-like splint through the middle
of my nose with semi-circular tubes for me to breathe through.  I
believe it was Augmentin I had to take to prevent infection, but no
seizures occurred.  My neuro. said the tumor could not have triggered
any seizures, even though I have severe epilepsy.

Please follow up later, I sure would like to find out any more info.

I'm back... dr says not sinus.  He sent ed for an MRI 9/9/04 waiting for
results.  dr. wants to rule out pituitary and thyroid.  I welcome any
input :(
