TLE & poor sleep

Hi

Most of my life I have been very sleepy. Doesn't matter how long I sleep for
at night, I can still doze off and have great trouble staying awake in
meetings etc.

After a sleep study ruled out apnoea or narcolepsy, my neurologist is
suggesting this may be TLE. The official diagnosis from the sleep dr was
"idiopathic hypersomnia" and the study showed that I did not go into stage 3
and 4 sleep like I should.

1) How can I have TLE if I have never (to my knowledge) experienced a
seizure? I do have episodes where I have strong sense of d?j? vu & then a
taste almost like "burnt metal" in my mouth. I sometimes have fits of
dizziness (vertigo?) for no good reason. Often have disturbing dreams and
when I first awake I don't know if I am awake or still dreaming. This seemed
enough for him.

2) Could anyone point me to information on any links between TLE and sleep
quality.

thanks
Kit

These episodes are called simple partial seizures / auras

When others don't smell these things but you do, then it is in your brain
so to speak. Some people call this an aura / some others call this a simple
partial. Some others call these smells a type of simple partial seizure.

An aura, also known as a prodrome or the prodromal phase of a seizure, is
actually a simple partial seizure. For many decades, seizure specialists
talked abaut auras as if they were no more then some sort of epileptic
early-warning system. It is true that many patients who have tonic-clonic
seizures do have auras beforehand, although some do not. However, an aura
is more than just a premonitory sensation.

Auras are highly individualized. Some people see flashing lights, others
smell a strange odor, and some simply have an odd mental sensation, such as
a floating feeling. It all depends on where the seizure focus is in the
person's brain, and where the process catched hold.

Yeah, these simple partials most likely start in one of the Temporal Lobes
in your case.

http://www.emedicine.com/NEURO/topic365.htm

It says the following:
Excessive daytime somnolence: This may be due to a sleep-related breathing
disorder or narcolepsy. It causes episodes of loss of time due to falling
asleep frequently.

To me it looks like your doctor provided you with a correct diagnosis.

Just do a search on google and yeah, you will find the exact matches
yourself. Actually, there are hundreds of them.

Let me / us know if you have further questions -we are here to try
answering them.

Marco already described some aspects of Deja Vu as Aura of Temporal Lobe
Epilepsy (actually it's a right side one, look at a left side temporal lobe
aura too).    You could look down Ep. Foundation of America to see if it has
more information http://efa.org .    The Older Temporal Lobe seizures (if
they were stronger)  might also be included within Complex Partial seizures.
(Usually with a C.P. seizure that's not controlled, it ends with loss of
consciousness when the seizure generalizes to more than just the T.lobes.
Since you're not getting those, most of your's would be under Simple Partial
type, but can be the Aura of a C.P. <--- you *Might find more of the
symptoms of what you describe below,  under either Temporal Lobe seizures
(on Google or efa.org above), OR within parts of C.P. seizures at same two
sites.)
It's common for some types of seizures to show up first while we're
asleep and our Guards are down, than during the daytime.  Some people
undergo a Sleep Deprived EEG for that reason too.

If you can find one of Julie's older posts, at the end, she lists the
Idaho Website.  (Don't bother her right now, just Click to the site direct,
please.)
Under that general site,  there's 1-2 First Aid for Seizures Charts.
They describe symptoms of various types of seizures, and first aid for each.
Check the **Symptoms of Simple Partial and other seizure types.    Both the
Grand Mal and Complex Partial? types can have a strange taste as part of the
Aura?? of a partial seizure, and should be listed on that chart.     G./
