I know GR and maybe others on the group have mentioned this. I have
right-brain TLE and though to my knowledge I have never experienced this
before, I had a seizure last night and one this morning and today I keep
picking up a couple of different putrid smells that no-one else can detect.
Among them: rotting fish and valerian root, which has a sort of sweaty-feet
smell.
Could this be my epilepsy talking or am I just more sensitive than those
around me?

Yes, it sounds like a simple partial seizure When others don't smell these
things but you do, then it is in your brain so to speak. Some people call
this an aura / some others call this a simple partial. Some others call
these smells a type of simple partial seizure.

An aura, also known as a prodrome or the prodromal phase of a seizure, is
actually a simple partial seizure. For many decades, seizure specialists
talked abaut auras as if they were no more then some sort of epileptic
early-warning system. It is true that many patients who have tonic-clonic
seizures do have auras beforehand, although some do not. However, an aura is
more than just a premonitory sensation.

Auras are highly individualized. Some people see flashing lights, others
smell a strange odor, and some simply have an odd mental sensation, such as
a floating feeling. It all depends on where the seizure focus is in the
person's brain, and where the process catched hold.

I truly hope I have been of any help to you.

I experience the latter. And I hate it. Now medications were upped to 1000
a day of tegretol (the generic) and 3 pills a day of keppra. Could be worse
I know, but I dont like the sluggish feeling I have now. Better than
seizures tho.

It could be either, but my guess would be that it's from the seizures.  I have
TLE and had a lot of "funny" smells (it was always the same smell).  The funny
smell didn't happen all the time either.  It didn't happen in a close time
frame to a seizure.  I don't get those funny smells anymore because my meds are
doing a good job of controlling the seizures.   It probably would be a good
idea to keep track of the odd smells as well as when the seizures happen.

Thanks, Marco and CC. I had another CP today, so I seem to be in a period of
"cluster" seizures or something. Up until now my auras or SPs have consisted
of flashing lights and weird feelings. I guess this is another new twist.
I have an appt with an epilepsy specialist next week, so maybe he'll have
some insights.

You could try a search under http://efa.org or some other sites if you have
any.  Right T.Lobe is usually a Lemon or Sour taste or odour, while the
Putrid, Eggy  or sulphur type one is supposed to indicate activity in the
*Left Temporal Lobe.    Similarly a feeling of Deja Vu is supposed to be
more prevalent in the Right T.Lobe Aura, while the Left side is supposed to
be a Jamais Vu (Never seen-  where your own place might feel like you're in
a stranger's house).
I had a site 'bookmarked' before but it was on my Win.95 computer, and I
didn't bring those sites over to this one, since I thought they'd be easily
found again. :-<   (Not much of a Deja Vu there !! )    G.
