David Garrison - 16 Jul 2004 21:59 GMT To all in need of information about Tegretol, I have been a Tegretol user for seizures for the past 16 years and have detailed knowledge about the drug. I can tell you the feelings of overdose, underdose, and any other questions you may have pertaining to this drug. I have been taking the regular 200 MG (pink pill) for years, and recently switched over to Tegretol XR (a controlled release version). If you have any questions, email me at garrisond2@pobox.winthrop.edu. Thanks--and hope this helped. Remember I am JUST A PATIENT. All info I have is informal.

Peter - 17 Jul 2004 03:40 GMT Hi David,
You've brought up some good points and I am interested in hearing what you have to say with respect to tegretol. So please continue, I'm sure others will listen in or would you rather go via email?
Let me know

I would be happy to post either way, either just chat through email, or on google. For the use of seizures, Tegretol has no only been the best for me, but I have been on it the longest, so I have a side effect symptom library that might be able to help people. Always be sure to double check anything I say with either other patients our your physician before altering anything. I'll keep checking back for questions that need to be answered. Take care.

Did you have any prior experience with Dilantin? I'm considering switching to an alternate due to gum overgrowth and calcium depletion.
Thanks, Bill

I'm just curious as to what your controlling, I have complex partial and do take tegretol (300mg Daily) in combination with (Epival 2000mg Daily). My control is not 100% and we're playing with dosage. So I'd like to hear what you have to say about your meds. So what do you feel when your dosage is off? Have you ever used it in combination? I've read that you should avoid a certain acid contained in grapefruit if your are using tegretol? Any cholesterol problems? My cholesterol is high and well we're not sure why? Yes it may be diet but it isn't that bad......... here you go.....
Thanks
Peter

Currently, I am also controlling complex partial seizures as well with JUST Tegretol as my source for drug admin. I'm sure that you've heard it a thousand times, but be careful with the dosage. I have played with the dose and it sent me into a seizure, not pleasant. Avoid at all costs grapefruit as it causes something called gain-of-function, very similar to that of drinking alcohol. It is basically were your liver releases more meds into your system at one given time than your body can handle. Dangerous. It can leave you in a state of "toxicity." Also, try your best to avoid all milk products with this drug...yes I know they say, "Take it with milk..." but recent studies have proven milk to be an inhibitor of absorption of this drug. This drug's PDR not in so many words states that the pill functions better on acid. Milk can act as a neutralizer of that acid, thus throwing absorption off, and the pill becomes ineffective for that dose. Avoid dairy if you can help it during the taking of your pill. This may be one of the causes of problems with the drug instead of dosage problems. It was for me. High cholesterol kind of comes with the territory with this drug. It is just imperative that you watch it, and more importantly, watch your liver ensymes, if they are elevated because of the drug, you may be in a state of overdose (perhaps!!). Liver trouble can be indicated through itching at every orifice, arms, legs, back, etc. When my dosage is off, I will have spells, hemifacial spasms, irregular breathing, and most recently, a seizure. This was indicitive of Tegretol XR, and milk, a bad combo. Most of Science has not caught up with this yet. If I am wrong, the worst thing that happens is that you take the pill with water. I recommend water and a carbohydrate like a cracker at least. Some other symptoms I have when the meds are off can be dizziness, disorientation, blurred vision. In most cases, the controlled release version of the drug can be helpful, but get many opinions on that. That would be Tegretol XR. It releases an even distribution of the drug through your body over a 12 hour period. More stable. Just have to learn how NOT to take it. 2200 MGs seems like a lot of meds. On a scale of 4-12, on my therapeutic level scale, I function the best around 6-7. This is something I feel all seizure patients should know. How low can you go where you will NOT have a seizure and have the meds still be effective. Worth discovering. Anyway, I'm still here--ask away if you have anymore questions.

2200mg seems like a lot of meds? Hell, I take over 5000mg what with Tegretol, Epilim, Neurontin and Clobazam all added up. BTW, how does Tegretol XR compare with CR? I've only experienced the CR. Which is more effective at giving an even release throughout the day? Or are they just different names for the same thing?
Cheers, Darryl.
gaross - 24 Jul 2004 04:20 GMT > > Peter, > > Currently, I am also controlling complex partial seizures as well with [quoted text clipped - 39 lines] > Cheers, > Darryl. I think there's a picture of each pill somewhere under the Medications glossary at http://efa.org site. I use the CR that's a solid tablet with a slot across the centre so it can be broken in 2 to make a half dose at the various mg levels (mine are 200mg). The XR is a Powder inside a 2 part hollow plastic tube that's swallowed whole (I swallow mine whole too). But the plastic then separates, the powder is released, and the plastic passes 'onward and outward', while my CR type (I think) dissolves with the food or juice I use. G./
Isabelle - 20 Jul 2004 06:49 GMT Hi David
I was on Tegretol Retard 600mg twice a day Lamotrigine 150mg a day and Frisium 10 mg a day
from May 1990 to September last year. Since then as i had had no seizures i was advised to try to reduce my teretol. I have now got to a point where i am on only 600 mg tegretol a day and i feel so much brighter, alert, am able to go to work without saying "im so tired".
Just thought id let you know. Oh and im female and 32 if that makes any difference.

Jim Garland - 20 Jul 2004 14:44 GMT I appreciate seeing this as I have been on Tegritol for 16 years now and I am "gulp" almost 40....ha.. I take 800mgs CR /day....and my side effects are mainly -being tired or very easily tired.. Do you find this as if I push myself too hard I get very tired and it takes me longer to recover.? -I get confused easily and find that I don't have that quick draw ability anymore on the thinking part.. -can't stand crowds with noise...like a big meeting room with all kinds of people talking...I find it hard to concentrate and have difficulty hearing...and focusing. - oh yeah...did I mention being tired...! I work in an office environment and very busy and work on average about 50hrs a week and find that come the end of the week I am wiped ... But if I get a good sleep I am fine.> Well if there are any links on the Tegritol specifics I would love to have so please email me. Cheers

I've been on tegretol for 30 years now......I'm 38. I've been taking 1600mg CR, but just recently reduced to 1200mg with the introduction of Neurontin. I have the exact same effects that you do, though I don't find the tiredness so much of a problem. But it may just be that I'm used to being tired and just don't realise that I am. My main effect seems to be the confusion and inability to think quickly.....and NO short term memory. Darryl.

[quoted text clipped - 25 lines] > > > > David turbinado - 21 Jul 2004 01:16 GMT I've been on Tegretol CR for about 2 years. I'm currently on 1000 mg per day, 400 am and 600 pm. I'm seeing a specialist tomorrow to find out if I can avoid upping the dose AGAIN, since I've been having a seizure every couple of weeks for the last 6 or 8 months. It seems to be a pattern with all these drugs: they work fine for a while, then a tolerance develops and it's time for another increase. Unfortunately the side effects don't get reduced by the tolerance, only the *good* effects. :( The only important side effects I've noticed have been fatigue, a significant drop in IQ and memory loss. Malcolm's story gives me hope that some day, I can go off (or at least lower the dose) and have my memory and sharpness return...

I wish you the very best of luck (yes, I still read this NG ;).
I'm now enrolled in the National Marine School doing a correspondence theory course to fill in the missing bits needed to take Day Skipper Paper 2. I aim to finish that within a month (two months is recommended but there's some material which I've already done, plus I'm on holiday). This is parallel with replacing my bathroom, finishing off the kitchen, doing all the paperwork for new courses at school and writing a new departmental policy. I've joined the county sailing club for some free- time enjoyment.
I still fall asleep sometimes during the evening news, and if I feel tired mid-afternoon I make sure I get up and DO something active, or I'll doze off - 25 years of Tegretol-induced habits die hard!
Having the new energy is lovely, getting organised is the difficult bit. I find a written 'plan for the day' helps, even with times given, to make sure I don't fall behind or miss out. Each day starts with sitting down to draft this, then I insert slack as I know I'm not superhuman and still need some down-time.
There *is* life after medication, and I hope you can find it someday - I just wish I could have found it 25 years ago. My one worry is that something will creep up behind me someday and put me splat back at square one :( But I've kept alcohol-free even though there's no meds left in me.

stevennnn - 14 Jul 2007 04:56 GMT First thinks David your information has been useful. I have been on Tegretol for 18 years. I have had only a few miner episodes over the last 18 due to missing my meds and most of the time lack of sleep and stress due to my job. In the last two months I have had around two to four attacks each day. They do not manifest to complete seizures. They go almost there and then slow down. I get a tickle in my feet, up my legs, to my hands, then my face muscles move (left side). It sometimes goes into my head. But always stops theres. CT scans show nothing. But, the scans were done three to four hours later. My meds were showing in the right ranges. My range rides between 10.5 to 11.5.
I did take to much medicine a couple of times and corrected it. I corrected this way back in june of this year. But, I am still getting the same feeling. Daily. Today was only one time. I feel like my short life pill now has a real short life. Like the 12 hour seem to run out after 7 to 8 hours. The doctor says everything looks fine. I say, your doing the scans to late and it is not major activity. After all this time she finally is sent me to a nuro to get check out and next week they are finally doing a EEG. What do you think happened to me. Just looking for real answers. The first episoide happened before taking extra meds.
