Similar to Dilantin, Tegretol should be taken with Milk, Food or Juice.
The Controlled Release (XR or CR) works better for some of us than the
straight Tegretol pill.
**However, Grapefruit juice has an acid that other citrus drinks don't, so
it shouldn't be used with Tegretol. In case you were, I thought I should
add that.
If you're getting your prescriptions from Shoppers Drug mart (Canada),
that should already be on the 'Healthwatch' Printout they give with new
prescriptions (grapefruit comment was added about 1996).
Upset stomach remedies and **Alcohol also mess up Tegretol levels (that
too is similar to a lot of AEDs).
Like Dilantin, it depends on a routine med. level as the Doctor
recommends, and should not be altered or **stopped promptly. If the pills
were taken (by someone reading this) but only erratically, that can cause
potential 'recoil seizures' (my term) from the withdrawal, if the pills
aren't being taken each day as they prescribed.
After about 2? years on Tegretol CR, I had to reduce the night dose and
augment my pill levels with a second med. (Clobazam = Frisium) for Complex
Partial (Temporal Lobe) seizures. Once I got to a stable morning dose of
Tegretol and Frisium and night dose of Frisium, I haven't had another
seizure for my type since 1998.
P.S. I'd be somewhat surprised if they moved you back to Dilantin (a
1930s medication) from the more recent Tegretol. They might alter the doses
like above, upward or down, or add a second complimentary Med. instead.
What do you mean below by 'little seizures'? Auras and dizzy or drunk
feelings? or full 'drop down' type seizures? A 'drunk' sensation, possibly
the dizzy spells too, might mean the dose is too high, Auras still or
Simple Partial seizures might mean the dose level might need adjusting
upward slightly, for you body weight and metabolism. (Each of us is
different so some of these pills need minor adjustments, if things are only
a little out of Whack. Major out of whack might need more Medical tests.

well i started with dilantin, and when i switched doctors, the new doc
switched me to tegretol. dilantin did me fine, as my little seizures were
once a week maybe. now they are everyday. they upped my tegretol to 1000mg a
day (2 morning, 3 night) and i also take clobazam (frissium) as well. 30mg
of the stuff. but no change. my tegretol levels were low at 800mg/day. maybe
1000 still isn't cutting it.
'little seizures' are panic episodes accompanied by a taste and a smell and
a black out. like today's little bike ride down the waterfront path. i felt
it coming on, veered off onto the grass to stop, started panicking, fell off
the bike, scrambled for my tranquillizers (ativan - the good stuff) and
blacked out. woke up to some nice people who stopped to help me.
i have a feeling that these seizures are panic induced. and i have a psych
who's got me on celexa (just started) to fight the panic. so many meds....
but last year on dilantin, was bliss compared to this....
how much clobazam do you take?

I take 10mg (1 tablet) with 400mg Tegretol CR (2 pills) in morning, and
just the Frisium (Clobazam) 10mg at night. That's why I assumed if you had
moved over to those 2 that they might not want to (be able to?) move you
back to Dilantin? I'm no M.D., but I had Lousy control with Dilantin, lots
of 'surprise szrs.' with little to no aura before onset.
With pure Tegretol CR I had 30 seconds to 5 minutes before Complex
Partial (Temporal Lobe) onset, long enough to find somewhere safe to
'recline' or get to cool air or something cool to drink -- which sometimes
suppressed the rest of the Aura.
As I think I said, with the dose above, last C.P. seizure I had was June
1998, and I haven't had a dose change since about 1995/6.
(I added the alcohol and grapefruit stuff since some people earlier
hadn't been told about either of those conflicting with Tegretol. I only
found out about the Grapefruit initially *here! When I took a printout to
the pharmacy, it had already been added to the new advisories they gave out
with Tegretol CR prescriptions.)
That's too bad it's not working for you. While I used Dilantin for almost
18 months, I had become convinced that there might not be Anything that
would give me control again. G.R.
