BlankMessage pour Howdy Dave --> Dawn Compton has not been able to access
your website, and asked me to ask you to read your Guestbook.   She only
seems to get a Blank Page when she tried to click to your Website from
addresses I sent her in an Email.
She was also having trouble getting all the messages on this group, and
when she tries to Reply to some of the posts she *can read,  the Software
she's using can see Most of the posts, but None of yours.  (She got your www
address since I emailed it to her, and forwarded 2-3 of your Posts Inline.
She hadn't seen your Posts I forwarded to her, on her groups topics.)
I wondered if your 'inverted nose'  graphic on your posts is producing
characters that her reader can't Decode, so it might be Discarding all
**your posts on the Group View at her end.   Perhaps you have some Geekdom
contacts that might be able to help her.  She wanted some information (I
think) on the VNS and some of your experiences wrt. type of seizures you had
vs. ones she has.

Naturally being 'well organized'  after the Lightning storm went
through, I can't find the Hardcopy of the note she sent me where she
describes which server/method she's using to read the group.

She's using  Webtv, if that means anything to Others reading this too.  If
you can reply to this note (on the group) and tell me how she can Subscribe
from there and IF WebTV supports an option like *I* like, where you can sort
Messages by Message Thread.  (I told her I found that Easiest to keep
conversations separate but organized, before I realized she couldn't find or
Didn't Have? that option on WebTV?)

I'll find where I printed the earlier note she sent me, and Post what she
wrote to me in more detail, if it's much different from what I describe
above.

I thought there might be some other 'geeks or geekettes'  around here who
could help her Join In Too...   She seems to be able to see Most of the
Posts by everyone here, Except for 'the guy with the Nose' (Dave)...  (I've
also got her Direct address if you wanted to write her Direct   G./

Thank you. Now we can try see if she can Link to those sites from 'here'
(your post).    I sent my 'list' that includes 2 of yours, that I sometimes
have posted on the group, but she had trouble getting to them from my
Letter.  I suspect it might be a Server/software 'stumble'  at her server,
but thought a 'clean list' like below might help us Troubleshoot her
settings.  G./

I also wondered if her WebTV software is 'weak'  wrt features others of us
have, and if it might be stumbling on the 'eyeballs' in your Signature, as
being a non-qwerty character.  So if her's discarded the message content on
sites she was trying to read, WEBTV might be editing out the Content of the
whole link.   Time will tell.    Thanx.   G./

Not to start a huge arguement here, but first of all, I wanted to tell
all that I did get Dave's latest e-mail.  I would also like to thank him
for basically telling me I don't know how to work a link and that I
shouldn't expect people to lay information (IMO, that you can only get
from patients) in my lap {sarcasm}.  For those who don't believe me, I
will copypaste his e-mail at the bottom of this post.

I also can't through on the links here that Dave posted.  I could see it
this time around.  These links are NOT working with my webtv while other
site's links do work, like to the one to Julie's idaho page.

*****Dave's Reply To Me, though it doesn't have quite the same look as
it did, but none of the words have been changed.*****

Howdy Dawn!
MOF I sent my previous e-mail directly from my guest-book.
As for "really don't want to get into more discussion groups"...
You don't have to "get into" the group, you can just go there as a
lurker and look up information for yourself.
The VNS Message Board
http://s4.invisionfree.com/VNS_Message_Board/
Is that a broad enough hint?
If not I'll just have to use the tough love method and come right out
and say it:
The information is out there to be had. If you are not willing to put
forth a little concerted effort to find out for yourself by looking at a
site don't expect people to just put the information into your lap for
you.
So you can't use a link, eh?
Did you try to just copy the URL into the address box and go there
manually?
(1) While your cursor is on the desired link do a right click. This will
open up a gray box.
(2) The bottom option in that box is "Properties"
(3) Click on the "Properties" option.
(4) This will open a window containing the Address (URL) of the page you
want.
(5) Highlight and copy the URL (or just write it down.)
(6) Paste the URL into the address box where you type a URL to get to a
site. If you wrote down the address, type it in instead of pasting it
in.
(7) Enter
This will take you to the desired site.

Hi Dawn, teach a man to be respectful and who knows what might happen ;-)

FYI I noticed Dave's site was showing some strange code one other time when
I went to refer it to someone.  I figured it was the browser I was using.

Dave, here is what I see when I click on VNS link using Netscape 4.73 (I
know it is a very old version).
ÿþ<l.ca=brs, rrs a72

That is it - that is all the page shows.

Then if I use Netscape 7 I get a huge page of this:
ÿþ< (followed by some strange characters that look kind of chinese.  I tried
to copy and paste here, but the only thing that copied was ÿþ<

So, it is not just Dawn who cannot read your site.  It does seem to work in
IE.

Dawn, Dave is using frames, but I don't know that is the reason you can't
read his entire site.  Try going to his menu frame only and click on those
links.

I have a feeling you will run into the same problem.

Julie, I have tried almost all of his links.  With some, I can get to a
second page, but no farther than that.  I don't think it is because of
my webtv, considering I have never had this problem with sites before.
There has to be something dealing with his site that must not allow
people with webtv to see it.
Julie - 16 Jun 2004 06:14 GMT
Yes, he has code that may not work with WebTV or netscape - at least the
older versions.  Nevertheless it was no reason for his rude post to you.
You and I are here for support.  Dave needs to clean up his act as well as
his website ;-)

Take care,
Julie

Dave ???? - 16 Jun 2004 07:48 GMT
Maybe I was not explicit enough.

Everybody here is talking about getting to a site by :

CLICKING ON A LINK.

The instructions that I gave Dawn told her not to depend on a link, rather
type the URL of the desired site in and go directly to the site without
having any intermediary software interfering with the process. If she does
not know what the URL is, my instructions told her how to find it.

I told Dawn about an information resource:

The VNS Message Board
http://s4.invisionfree.com/VNS_Message_Board/index.php?act=idx

where she can ask specific questions and get responses from a lot of
different people who have had the VNS implant. At least a few of these
people should be able to identify with her situation and give her far better
advice than I ever could.

Dawn came straight out and said that she REFUSED to go to an interactive
information resource.

Let's talk a bit about support for a moment...

There are basically two alternatives given the situation:

You can either pat somebody on the head while waiting for them to finish
their little tantrum

OR

You can give them a wake up call and make them face the fact that when they
refuse to use resources that have been presented to them, they should not
expect the kid glove treatment!

Howdy Julie!

EUREKA! (sp?)

re: "rude"  I have a tendency to slip in and out of Canadian vernacular
speech (along with other coloquialisms that I have picked up over the years)
without even being aware of it!

Ending a sentence with:
", eh?"

is in no way intended to be rude. It is merely an informal, friendly
Canadian speech pattern.

Ever seen "Red Green"?  He epitomizes Canadian speech by ending his
sentences like that all the time, eh?

(If you look through all of my posts you'll probably find quite a few
"don'cha knows" in there too!)

How would either of them using a 'killfile'  get Dawn information or
*support wrt. the VNS that her Doctor suggested she might have to
investigate having installed?
If either were to use a killfile as  the best we can provide her wrt
'support', then it defeats the purpose of the Group Title, doesn't it?

I've pointed multiple people to that site, as well as Julie's and the EFA
site.   If there are some cases where a particular server or access mode
doesn't work there, I'd like to *know so I can add that Caveat if I refer
someone there again -- and I thought he might want to know too, if there are
some cases where people can't get the links to work.

(You'll see Julie was able to get to it on One version of Netscape, but
not another.  I was able to with Windows XP, but Dawn was using a different
connect mode, which I explained 3? days ago near the top of this thread.
That's why I thought some of the other lurkers (as well as the To address)
might have some ideas about if there were glitches or conflicts between
WebTV connect and Newsgroups in General.  She Wanted his site, but *I
thought it might be a Generic Problem with  the WebTV end.   Julie's note
earlier today/last night appears to suggest it's not just WebTV.)

You told me, as everyone else got to read, that I was basically stupid
if I couldn't work a link.  Plus, I explained (calmly, nicely) that I
had tried to get to your site several times, but it DID NOT work for me.
I have tried punching it in, but your SITE does NOT have all the
appropriate CODES for some older webtv or netscape programs TO USE IT.
Julie and I both have tried to explain that to you.

If you really need me to REXPLAIN it for you, I said I didn't want to
get into another newsgroup. I am not one of those types, LIKE YOU, who
likes to go around and explain to everyone who will listen about all of
my problems.  Plus, the friggin discussion group link thing wouldn't
work for me either.  You must have your own problem with getting all of
your codes and stuff coirrect.  That is not MY problem.  I simply was
adviced by a few people (I refuse to mention names) to ask you for
informaton, but you had to be hateful and decline me by insulting me.
You had the alternative to be nicer.

>You can either pat somebody on the head
>while waiting for them to finish their little

Reread your e-mail and then say who is having the tantrum.  I bet some
people here, like Julie, will agree it is YOU having a temper tantrum
just because you were ASKED to HELP someone out, which involved
POLITENESS and because someone mentioned your SITE was giving THEM
PROBLEMS.

OR

>You can give them a wake up call and make

Lets think about this a moment, shall we?  I use this newsgroup, I
e-mail to several people outside of the group for information, and I
tried to use your site.  WOW I MUST BE SO INCOOPERATIVE.  I tried to use
the friggin RESOURCES AS YOU PUT IT, but they PLAINLY DID NOT WORK with
my system.

Hopefully, now you can get a HINT yourself.
Dave ???? - 16 Jun 2004 08:09 GMT
Howdy Julie!

My VNS site is not in frames, it's an entity unto itself.

All of my code is handwritten in VERY basic html code. Since my code has not
been generated by a design program (software) there is no redundant code, no
revision dependant code, no viewer dependant code and no cascading style
sheets.

It should be user friendly to all internet access software, hardware and
filtration systems.

Oh....

There is one possibility...

My character code specification is "iso-8859-1"

That may not be standard in some VERY old Netscape software.

Hi Dave

I see that you did a W3C validation quite some time ago with a provisional
validator.  You might wish to bring it up to date now with
http://validator.w3.org/
There are a number of current problems that may be causing the troubles with
Netscape & Mozilla and may be causing Dawn's troubles with WebTV (just a guess
as I don't know for sure).

Note to GR: Perhaps the newsgroup messages in HTML are the percentage that are
unreadable in WebTV?

The key word here is SHOULD.  That does not mean it does, as I and Julie
have both pointed out it does NOT work with all systems.  Stop being so
friggin hateful and stop thinking that YOU are always right, because
half of the time, I get this feeling you probably don't know your BUTT
from your HEAD.
gaross - 16 Jun 2004 05:15 GMT
From my earlier post (I did a General one on the Group at bottom, vs.
writing you direct, since she was using WebTV to access the group and was
having trouble getting any links to open).  As I said on earlier post, when
she clicked to a link on your site it gave her a blank page.   She was also
not seeing Some poster's posts *here* that I mentioned to her in discussions
off-group.  That's why I wondered if someone using WebTV knew of a fix or
how to help, so she could (1) see all of our posts, and (2) be able to get
information on the VNS that you had compiled over the years..
I doubt that Right Clicking, Copying and Pasting, Left Clicking, Banging
the Parrot 3 times and shouting "hello polly'  will do much, if there might
be something 'unique' about linking via WebTV to the group, rather than
using Windows systems like most of the rest of us are using  (from the stuff
she cut and pasted here somewhere).  Her Email works OK, and she's able to
Post here and read about 80% of the posts.  Some others don't show up on her
WebTV link, And she didn't seem to be able to get into your site from WebTV
either.

I included this in the Earlier post -->
She's using  Webtv, if that means anything to ***Others reading this****
too.  If
you can reply to this note (on the group) and tell me how she can Subscribe
from there and IF WebTV supports an option like *I* like, where you can sort
Messages by Message Thread.  (I told her I found that Easiest to keep
conversations separate but organized, before I realized she couldn't find or
Didn't Have? that option on WebTV?)   //

From what I gather chatting with her directly, WebTV link is awkward to
use, and doesn't have all the frills I have with Windows XP, but some Other
Posts, in addition to your Website, she also doesn't get and only sees the
content when someone Else does a reply to 2-3 'of you'.    Your's was the
site she was most interested in, as her Doctor had suggested the VNS might
be something she'd have to consider, and I thought it would just be a matter
of posting the Webaddress, Clicking onto it (as windows supports), and she's
there.

Apparently with WebTV that's where she gets the Blank Pages, so I
wondered (out loud, here) if it was html scripting that was confounding the
WebTV service she is using, or something else.   And I assume, as a student,
a New Improved Win.XP computer just to read your Website is not something
that's a priority for her at the moment.

We'll work something out (she and I) .    Thanks for trying.    Just what
someone needs under Stress of new diagnosis is someone who's trying.....
G./

(The word 'blank' at start of my older post below, indicates that my
computer, at least, was first composing my message in html, and when I
changed it to Plain Text, it replaces the html blank with the word 'blank'
....)
