** Help... Tegretol Theraputic Levels? **

Can anyone help me... I am having a really terrible time since developing
Epilepsy late on in life, i.e., 32.

Have been on several different meds, combination and singular treatments,
and had some horrible side affects with most.

So I was mighty happy when I discovered Tegretol combined with Keppra gave
me some relief from the numerous seizures I was having.

Recently tho my seizures are back, not just as bad as they were but I am
worried that things may be changing.

On Wednesday (as in yesterday) I seen my GP, had bloods done to check LFT
and Tegretol levels. My LFT has always been slightly high, but not
dangerously so.

So today I got a call from a strange Doctor telling me that my Tegretol
therapeutic levels are very high, he explained to me that anything above a
10 had no useful affect? And that was it, he left saying he'd contact my own
GP about the matter... so now I have a 100 questions, like can someone
explain to me what this means, does it mean am I getting nothing from the
meds anymore, have I become immune to them or do I just need a lesser dose
than my consultant has me on and what is the dangers of having a high
therapeutic level? Sorry I know I have so many questions... its just I would
like some info before my doctor gets back to me.

My daily AED doses are - Tegretol 900 mills daily (300 * 3 times a day)
Keppra 2000 mills daily (1000 * 2 times a day) does these doses seem high to
anyone?

Stay well, and thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Hi Donal, sorry I don't know the answer to your many questions, but had a
thought.  You might give a call to your pharmasist.

Take care,
Julie

The adult dose of Tegratol is usually between 800-1200 mg daily. Keppra
doses go up to 3000 mg daily.

I've never been on either, got the info here:
http://www.rxlist.com/

Sorry.

Hi Danny.

I have no experience with Keppra - can't even get it here in new zealand,
but I have been on tegretol for about 30 years. A lot of that time I was on
1600mg a day, which I was told was the maximum, however it does depend on
body weight, metabolism, etc. (I'm a 6 foot 3 man weighing around 100kg, so
could probably take more than someone smaller).
I think what the doctor may have meant was that any EXTRA above the 10
wasn't therapeutic, though the rest is still working. However, with levels
being that high, side effects become bad. Such as loss of balance, like
drunkenness.
With a reduction in your tegretol levels this should all come right.

As far as worsening seizures goes - I am no expert, apart from my own
experiences in which I have found that they can do that sometimes,
regardless of the control you have with medications. It's just a matter of
approaching the problem anew and finding what works with the way your
seizures have become. I stress that I am NO expert, but this is just what I
have found in my experiences with my own seizures.

Good luck with the doctor.
Darryl.

Danny
go to crazymeds.com to find all about your meds and the doses you're on, etc
etc.
The previously cited sites do not tell ypou really anything more than a package
insert info. See Crazymeds.com. Very real people on those meds sharing info
Good luck. You'll do fine. Post something there and you'll find the answer
quickly.
