Hello all!
I've had seizures now for over 20 years. They started out as simple partial
while I was on Dilantin, then I switched to Tegretol (which seemed to give
better control but made my thinking too cloudy.) Tried Gabitril for a
while, then switched back to Dilantin for a while but then my seizures
progressed to complex partial so gave Depakote a whirl. It was too harsh on
my body so went back to Dilantin and added Clonazapam. Now after three
years of that going to switch to Dilantin/Lamictal combination with the hope
of weaning off the Dilantin eventually.
I guess my question for the forum is has anyone done the switch from
Dilantin to Lamictal and if so, what are the side effects like? I've been
told Lamictal doesn't have the cognitive effects that Dilantin has, and that
there's a chance of a skin rash, but that's about all anyone has to say.
I'd really appreciate some first hand opinions as well as any information
about how to take the med to minimize side effects as well, for example - I
found that Dilantin works better when you maintain a high protein diet. Any
tips on Lamictal? Thanks.
Tom

Hi Tom,
Any chance that the body develops a tolerance to certain AEDs? Have you
mentioned dosages?
My father seems to be doing better at the hospital (recovering from hip
surgery and getting their minimum AED dosage - a combo of DPH and
Oxcarb, but I don't know for sure; problem is, the doc who signed his
prescription for many years is not participating in the assessments at
all, and the hospital has not assigned a neurologist to follow the
patient; their attitude seems to be 'he survived surgery (7 days ago)
using our posology, so let him consult with his regular doc after he's
discharged'.
From your posting, Tom, it seems your doc (only one?) is quite adept at
trying new drug therapies.
My best research so far (and see the bibliography) is:

Hi Tom,
I have been through a series of changes lately with meds. For a while
I was on dilantin and lamictal together with little side effects.
While I was beginning the lamictal I initially had an upset stomach
but that faded as my body adjusted to the meds. I never had the
pleasure of being on only one med. so I cannot offer any advice on
side effects of lamictal only.
I wish you luck in the search for the right med.

Tom,
I have done the switch from Dilantin to Lamictal but that was years ago... I
have a fact sheet on Lamictal that can be downloaded from my website:

Hi Thomas!
My 19 mos old is on Lamictal and until now it was working very well, minimal
side effets a bit of ataxia but then she is on Valproic and Clonazapam also.
The major side effect is the rash which can be life-threatening so dose up
very slowly. Our neurology team mentioned a severe allergic reaction at 5
mg!
Carl ;-)
