Howdy,

Well I'm new here and dont know much but I need info about a problem I and
my son have. About 2 1/2 years ago I had what the docs called a TIA at the
time, now they say it was a siezure. I started having these episods about 3
to four times a week with breathing problems and getting tired and having to
lay down afterwards to sleep for 1 to 2 hrs. I do remember the episodes as
if I was in a dream world not really there {sounds crazy) but sleeping. so
far they have taken my drivers license from me due to an over eager ER doc
with LIMITED info [yes i'm bitter] of my case. by the way I'm 45. a bit over
weight was at 350 after they put me on meds. now the question is I started
atkins about 3 months ago and droped 73 pounds so far and went into ketocis
<sp> and have not had a spell in 1 1/2 months. My 14 year old son has just
been told that he has Absence Seizures he has had 1 grand mal so far. He had
a 24 hr EEG and they said he had over a hundred miss fires. we read that the
atkins diet may be  helping me?. Anybody have info on this? and if it might
be good for a 14 year old...?? Thanks Rob (The New Guy)

PS It Kinda Sucks Waking up in the middle of the night shaking all over
(happend twice so far)

Hi Rob,,,
It sucks anytime we wake up shaking!!  ; )
I am on tegretol 800 MGs CR/day and have a grand mal about once every year
or two and lots of little wonderful auras..
I have been looking into the atkins diet as well as one of my co-workers is
on it and lost 40lbs...
I just worry about the vitamins that may be lost due to the strict
diet....if you find out more details please email me or post to this site..
Cheers and hope everything goes smoothly for you and your son.

Hi Jim,

I take a over the counter Multi vitamins & minerals tab. I am on Topiramate
150mg twice daily. atkins seems great for me but my kid is only 98 pounds so
were concerned due to the problem with appeitte loss on atkins.

In my state, Wisconsin, they take away EVERYONE's drivers license no matter what
kind of seizure disorder they have (not all seizure disorders result in shaking
or loss of consciousness).  Once the seizures are controlled for a specified
period of time, you can get your license back.  It is a pain in the butt.  But,
I have talked to people who were driving and had a seizure with a resulting
accident.  In two cases, nobody was hurt, but they were being sued for damage to
property (one hit a store building).

Since I've been doing medical transcription for a "spine" physician, I've come
to realize that if there is even a brief loss of consciousness and you hit the
back of a car (particularly if stopped at an intersection), even if you are
going at a slow speed  there can be significant spinal injuries to the
passengers of the car you hit even if they are restrained with seat belts.  The
thing about many spine injuries is the injury isn't apparent immediately, so
even if the people get out of the car you hit and say they feel fine, that might
not be the case.  After hearing how so many patients have been fighting pain,
trying so many ways to get the back injuries resolved, and the long period of
time these people suffer, I wouldn't want to be the cause of that kind of
injury.

Hey, you never mentioned if they want you to be tested or if they put you on any
seizure meds.  Did they refer you to a neurologist???

Hi Rob,

I've had complex partials for 2 years. I'm taking Keppra and Zonegran and
have seriously thought about starting on Atkins. In fact I tried a couple
months ago but I couldn't eat enough meat and I just felt horrible. Guess I
was doing something wrong.

do you mind me asking how did you make it through the first two weeks? I
didn't miss bread or potatoes, but I know I must have done something wrong.
I've read the latest book and the formulas for the omega 3, omega 9 - making
sure you are getting the right fats/oils etc was a tad overwhelming for me
so I guess I got discouraged thinking I couldn't do it. These meds have my
brain a little off. :)

I would really appreciate any help/advice you could offer.  I've read other
postings that this diet
was successful for others in reducing their seizures.

thank you so much for sharing your experience!

Trish
