Questions regarding Depakine Chro 500

Hello,

This is a small question about Depakine Chro 500 which I have been taking
for about approximately two weeks now. Right now, I do not suffer from any
side effects which is great :-)))

One of those scarry things I read on the Internet is that when one takes
natrium valproaat (Depakine), one suffers from extreme increase in weight.
Is there something that can be done to stop that? I can understand that when
one feels not happy to do anything (which is actually another side effect of
Depakine), one does not sport/move anymore or less then he/she used to do
previously. To explain my question: since January 1, 2004, I lost 16 KG
which I am proud of, I do not want to increase in weight again.

Anyone knows about anything that can be done? Taking less food, sporting,
etc., etc.? Or is it just a waste of time which means I am going to get
these additional kilos again?

Thanks for responding.

Marco

I don't have experience with Depakine but depression certainly can lead to
weight gain if you continue to eat the same amount while reducing your
activity level.  Some people stop eating when depressed while others eat
more in attempt to comfort themselves.  Weight gain in almost all instances
is calorie consumption > energy expenditure.  While a drug may make you feel
hungrier or less motivated to stay active you have the ability to overcome
these challenges if maintianing weight is important enough to you..  Best of
luck.

I think Bill's right. There's no magic trick to keeping the weight off.
Depakine will make it harder, so you'll have to have more determination .

Good Luck!

Thank you Bill / Donna. The future will proove how it will go then. It is
good to have such an active group backing up each other :-)

Hopefully I will be able to help others later on as well.

Sorry Marco, I usually can eat once a day and not even feel hungry, BUT when I
was on depakane I was always starving. I did put on 13 lb and I was very
careful to use fillers in my diet ie, celery, chicken boullion, anything with
hardly any calories just to satisfy the need. The drug didn't work for me so I
was more than happy to stop it and then lost the weight. I think it's just the
nature of the beast. Sorry, Vicki

At what point did you notice this side effect? Reaon of asking: I have taken
Depakine since exactly  12 days now and I do not notice any difference in
behavior/bad feeling in stomach/feelings of starvation, etc., etc. apart
from that I am not feeling dizzy anymore which I used to be all the time?

I think it is known for causing a change in appetitie, more or less depends
on how the person reacts to it. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones it
reduces appetite in.

Sorry Marco it's been 15 years since I took depakane but as I recall it started
as soon as I was up to the theraputic dose. Vicki

Okay, thanks. I will have to live with that too then. There are always other
things to worry about a little bit more of course :-)
