Dona - 12 May 2004 21:10 GMT The recent discussion on the possibility of an epileptic personality and the list of famous with epilepsy, got me wondering:
Where do the rest of you consider yourselves on the political spectrum, right, left or in the middle?
I tend to hang pretty far left with leanings towards the middle on a lot of things. But there are some issues I definitely go my own way on.

To some of my friends I'm a red under the bed, to others I'm right of Genghis Khan.
Whoever he was.
Of course I think that I'm so well balanced in every aspect of life that I'm nigh on perfection personified ... if only I weren't so modest.

Dave ???? - 13 May 2004 01:53 GMT Howdy!
It depends on the issues!
When it comes to health care I'm as far left as you can get.
International affairs and general politics: hmmmm... everybody that I know just spouts off what others have said (mostly the news broadcasters.) Guess I'm an independent thinker there - I annoy everybody.
I just love pokin' holes in everybody else's dogmatism.

The American Civil Liberties Union is an organization that everybody loves to hate! They defend legal rights in all sorts of unpopular issues.
While folks with epilepsy may scamper to the ACLU for their assistance in a discrimination case, they gasp in horror when they stand up for others on the right to die, abortion or same sex marriage issues.

I joined years ago - the ACLU does one thing only: it works to protect basic rights guaranteed under the US constitution - whether doing so is "convenient", popular, "in", or (very much) not... While others would readily sweep away basic rights for "good" reasons, these rights are difficult to restore once lost, so they MUST be protected - and the ACLU is the only institution/organization that has consistently tried to do this. The "bad rap" some organizations attempt to put on the ACLU should make one suspicious of those organizations' intents and purposes... -- David Ruether rpn1@cornell.edu http://www.ferrario.com/ruether

David Ruether - 05 Jun 2004 01:33 GMT > I know you're always looking for any tips or leads, so, without further comment, > take a look at: [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > Bob All this would be funny if it were not so terrible! At least with these two sites a heart problem is diagnosed when the seizures do not fit "normal" epilepsy. Around here, one not only must put up with the problem of mis-diagnosis, but also with the common "dead-end" diagnosis (for anything that does not fit rigid and simple definitions of epilepsy or a movement disorder) of "it's in your head"! Stories abound of people with MS, Parkinson's, odd seizure disorders, etc.being sent to psychiatrists to cure them of this "conversion disorder" (this silly condition is known by many other names, some not very "savory"...;-). Thanks for the info above, though - it is always useful to hear of other possibilities. As for me, unbeknown to two neurologists who decided it was "CD" for me, I'm now on my second AED with another (the first AED failed spectacularly - something that is not supposed to happen with "CD"...;-), and after several increases in dose level over the last month, three days ago, after the usual three days of feeling that my head was stuffed with cotton (the usual feeling for me with each increase with this AED), all the nonsense I've been experiencing in the last eight months disappeared! Too early to celebrate victory, BUT....! ;-) (BTW, with "treatment", I was told that "CD" could take 7-10 years to "cure", since I had had it so long [or, until the insurance runs out, whichever comes first?;-]) Aaaaaaarrrrrrgggggh! ;-) Thanks for the post. --DR

> Keppra? The first was Topamax, but depression on it (and HORRIBLE speech problems) at low dose led me to get off it after only three weeks - and the effects of leaving it were also bad ("climbing the walls" for three weeks, with continued speech problems after that - but these effects are not typical). I waited a long time before daring to try another, which was Depakote. Both AEDs have multiple uses, but the other uses do not appear to be relevant for me (no Bipolar, etc.). Now entering "Day Four" without anything but the very slightest "nibbles around the edges" from what were daily multiple problems - and hoping this continues! Early next week, I will go up one more "notch" in dose level, then get things checked out to see where I am. Keppra was considered an alternative by one neurologist, but not mentioned by the one who put me on Depakote. BTW, I will attempt today my first commercial job in a long time! So much for a disability application - but I prefer to feel the way I do now than how I did a week ago! --DR

gaross - 07 Jun 2004 16:18 GMT I didn't post your 'headers' unless you wanted me to. You Both (MAILERS BELOW) have < >s around your Email addresses, inside your Options You've set up. Those work the same as [ ]'s on older (other?) systems where, if someone tried a 'Reply to Sender' from your Group Post, the Software can't SEE your address, so they can't Write you Direct. That works fine, to keep the Echo Trolls from harvesting your address. It's a Pain at times if some of us wanted to Click 'Reply to Sender', and just send you a short off-group note or Reply.
In my case If I run into those NOW, I don't open the headers to see what the Real Email address is, I just hit DELETE (my reply) and move on to another topic or subject. I don't have time to dive into Geekdom unless it was something Really important to start with. G./

Shouldn't "dogmatism" be plural as in "I just love pokin' holes in everybody else's dogmatisms."

NOPE!
"Everybody" is a singular noun
re: "dogmatism". Dogmatism is a matter of faith.
OK, let's consider faith... For the sake of argument, let's pick on the Catholics! A Catholic believes many things but the collective is:
The Catholic FAITH (not faiths)

If dogmatism were a collective noun to what would it relate? A dogmatism of dogmas? So I dispute your collective noun claim!
Dogmatism is a property, a tendency towards being dogmatic and forcefully adhering to dogmas (not dogmae, because IMHO it derives from Greek, not Latin).
Just being a pain in bum for the sake of it, Regards,

Dona - 16 May 2004 01:15 GMT >(not dogmae, because IMHO it derives from > Greek, not Latin). Actually more correctly wouldn't it be dogmata?

I had assumed it would be a first declension noun if it were Latin, and I did not think it was.
My assumption was correct upon looking it up as it derives from Greek, 'dogma', meaning opinion. Its Greek plural would therefore indeed be 'dogmata'. Go to the front of the class, Dona. You have remembered your schooling well, and may I join you obsessive club?
Whether this plural is the one used in English I do not know. There are plenty of other words in use which derive from Greek and although the plural of 'schema' is 'schemata' in the world of developmental psychology, and 'stoma' pluralises (?!) to 'stomata' even in current school Biology, I doubt that the plural of 'enigma' is ever referred to as 'enigmata'.
PS. How can I set up a shortcut key for typing 'remember' please?

Dave ???? - 16 May 2004 17:08 GMT Howdy Malcom!
I still cling to my original argument about a collective singular v. a plural.
In this case (for me anyway,) it's a matter of semantics, not linguistics.

"What is a pragmatic, pedantic dogmatist?"
Hmm... a person who focusus on trivial things like how a sentence is written rather than the question being asked (this usually indicates that a person has a very narrow scope on learning.) This is the sort of person who believes that s/he can make people better by pointing out their gramatical mistakes and who is going to keep on doing it no matter how much it annoys people?
You know... the mother who doesn't answer your question but keeps correcting you: 'may' dear, not 'can,' 'will' dear, not 'shall,' 'who' dear, not 'whom,' 'capatilize your letters dear' or 'shouldn't that be a plural instead of a singular dear?' sort of person!
Am I even close? :D

When I was back in elementary school that's what they called the government that we have here in the USA.
a.k.a. a "Jeffersonian Democracy"
BUT
Since the word has been so overused and just about everybody has a different definition of "democracy"... IMO the word is, for all intents and purposes, meaningless.

Then again...
It's not a very good idea to get totally dependant on just ONE support group -- especially if it's out there in cyber-space!
Get your feet wet in AT LEAST one other group. I have several listed on the Epilepsy page of my site!
