Topomax questions

I am now on the full dosage of Topomax 200 mg per day. It started out very
early on working well. In fact I was seizure free for about 3 weeks and then
they started again. I was once again seizure free yesterday and today is
another day. Is this common or maybe I should say has this been common for
those that have been able to handle this drug? I am having no problems with
it. In fact I am very pleased with the results other than the seizures. I
was at 329 pounds and I am already at 316 pounds, I can tell it has my
appetite somewhat suppressed, which is a good thing. The biggest thing I
notice is I used to eat a bedtime snack every night and that is very rare
now. I no longer crave it. If I do I usually eat oranges or some kind of
citrus. I still have a long way to go and nothing but time to get there, so
I am pleased. I did fu*k up the other day and by mistake I increased the
dosage 50 mg in the morning when I should have only increased it 25, I was
sicker than a dog for a good 24 hours. If I could have thrown up it would
have been better. It was like this medicine was telling me "hey look you
fu^ked up and now I am going to punish you" damn it was rough.

I was just wondering if anyone had been started on this med and it worked
well at first then slacked off? If it has done this my next question to you
is this, once on the full dosage did it come back and help you again or did
it stay in the slacked off state?

Thanks so much.

One place they could be having trouble with getting optimum control is
wrt. metabolism and total weight, balance with the mgs. of the medication.
You Sound like you're on the right track and feeling better, even w. some of
the setbacks.   As your weight continues to decrease, you might be able
(with the Doctor) to decrease some of the medication levels too.
Is there any printout that came w. the medication (prescription), or
possibly under http://efa.org for the particular medication (I haven't used
it),  about Food or Juice that should Not be used with it?
What I mean by that is, with Tegretol, I got some Random (irritating)
seizures that I couldn't relate to Anything, but they finally stopped.  Then
when I was first online I read that Grapefruit Juice had an Acid that
conflicts with Tegretol, that is not in Other Anti Ep Drugs, unless they're
the same 'family or pills'.    I took the printout to my Pharmacist and that
advisory had been added to the Printout.  They just hadn't given it to
people who had already been using it!!

I wondered, reading below, if Some of what you're experiencing could be
items like that conflicting with the last of the control.  (Alcohol, you
probably know, and some upset stomach remedies also conflict with
medications, so I assumed neither of those applied here.)   G./

Topamax worked very well for me for the first few months, but then a pattern
started to emerge where the seizures would come back, neuro would increase
the dose (therefore side effects woud increase as well), that would do the
trick for a couple of months, then it was time to increase again. That's why
I had to go off it, because I was up to 500 mg and I could barely speak or
understand English.
Unfortunately I only lost about 15 pounds in the 18 months I was on it.
That's one side effect I would have welcomed!

G'day tim,
i took topomax for about 10 months. i found that topomax in conjunction gave
me total control with no epileptic activity at all while taking it. also
while taking it i lost 33 kgs so i was very happy from those perspectives.
topomax worked well for me for the whole period i was taking it with no
slackening off period as you mention in your post. i did find as i was
ramping up the dosage to the optimal level (200mg b.i.d.) that it would make
me very ill for several days until i adjusted to the increased dosage.
unfortunately topomax didn't agree with me as it caused very strong
depression and i started to forget even the most basic things in my life.
just keep an eye out for these things but there is no reason why it won't
work well for you.
