I just joined this group. My wife just had the VNS implant done. Anyone had
success with this procedure?
Thanks

G: --> Below is a reply one of the Founders of ASE did back in March. He
also had his own message source within his Website at
http://www.howdydave.com/vns.html .
Someone said he wasn't subscribed right now, but he might return later.
(We all come back usually.)
But another poster? said he had recently had mixed success with the
implant that he had? Not sure.
A website that he posted here back in March is here (if I cut and pasted
his post properly). -->
Howdy!
I went to the Cyberonics VNS message board and found this:
===================
Cyberonics has permanently discontinued the VNS Therapy Message Board. The
Company offered the Message Board as a medium for discussions among patients
and potential patients regarding their experiences with epilepsy and VNS
Therapy. Increasingly, however, the Message Board has been an instrument for
abuse by certain individuals.
Cyberonics deeply regrets the inconvenience to patients and potential
patients.
===================
They didn't like all of the negative reports that were being posted about
the device.

I've had a VNS for nearly 3 years now and I've had wonderful success with it.
I had a dramatic decrease in seizures, the few that I have are much less
severe and don't leave me with a post-ictal hangover, and overall I'm much
more alert. I also don't have the cloud of depression that was always hanging
over me. My doctor and I fiddled with the settings for about the first 6
months, but we've found what seems to work. I've greatly reduced my
medication and no longer take anti-depressants. The device itself doesn't
affect me at all--I exercise daily (swim a mile 3 times a week, take aerobics
classes, etc.) and do everything I did before. Since I was never one for
plunging necklines I don't worry about the cosmetics of the device. Just for
the record, I'm a 52 year old female.
Good luck.

That made me smile.
I'm one of the very high percentage of women who have had treatment for
breast cancer. In my case it ws a lumpectomy, the scar (such as it is) shows
if I wear an open necked shirt - which I do frequently even at 65.
So what?
So what if a VNS (whatever that is) shows?
So what if someone has a mastectomy?
If I were 25 I'd still flaunt my scar.
It's not an invasion, it's not an ugly scar, it's not a disfigurement or a
mutilation - it's a symbol of life saving or life enhancing technology
So saying - I wouldn't have my ears pierced - now that IS ugly mutilation
:-) But I would wear a hearing aid, as I wear sight aids (spectacles).
Why are we so sensitive?
Mary.
