I deleted Sci. med. nutrition Group above, since I don't post there.

Make sure the Doctor knows which other substances he's taking (Bottom)
when they're prescribing stuff. They might have more detail on Medication
scripts, which a Pharmacist might also have, that would list any conflicts
that might be possible but not listed on that standard prescription
instructions.
There are some things that might seem 'healthy' but that can conflict or
de-activate valid anti seizure medications.
(Grapefruit Juice will corrupt Tegretol for one, and render it either
ineffective or unstable. I never related several seizures that I had in
1995, to having drunk that 24-36 hours previous with the Morning Medication
I used. I found the negative link, between those two, after I went online
in 1998, Long after I had decided to not use Grapefruit Juice blends with my
morning pills.)
I haven't used Valproic Acid, although there were others around here a
year or two ago who were prescribed that. Most of the people I think were
in the UK?
(You could also ask on the uk.people.support.epilepsy group too. That
group became almost inactive about 6 years ago, since it was being so
heavily 'harvested' by one of the alleged 'Network Coordinators' that most
people had stopped posting there. But if it's active you could try a
*separate Posting there. If it's not active, just leave it. )
What 'possessed you' to try something like that? (Below) --> Just some
posters on the internet and a Google count of how many posted about that?
Yeah, I guess I have a few biases, especially when it might affect kids for
the rest of their Lives if we mess something up in their treatments.
Depending on the seizure type --> I think Tonic Clonic seizures now are
grouped either within Grand Mals or Complex Partials (depending on the side
effects they have while they happen?).
I had been told at first that mine were T.C. , but later told they were
really Complex Partials. Although a lot of the Google sites list the older
term, most of the newer Internet Information is listed using the Newer
Terms? (I think).

Some of us get an Aura that might be triggered anew or **aggravated by
particular tastes or odours. (My right Temporal Lobe auras were sour lemon
taste or odours. If I drink anything now with a Lemon Taste, food that's
been **cooked with lemon, or go near Floor Cleaners that use lemon, I start
getting the swirling, dizzy feeling of an Aura Onset-- start of a potential
seizure, that I haven't had since late 1990s. ) Is he old enough to tell
you if he gets any strange Tastes or Odours or feelings just ahead of the
type of seizure he is having?
If he gets a Sour or Eggy taste (different types) the Doctor should know
that already, since each is from a different seizure type. Similarly there
are other symptoms the Dr. should be monitoring since he's already
prescribing a Medication to try control his type of seizures.
Unless you have a strong reason to, I'd stay away from mixing Herbal
medicines with Prescription Medicines unless the Doctor is aware that you're
doing that. In many cases some of the products might be mutually exclusive
of each other. (No, I didn't try fish oil, btw. ) But if the Doctor is
bumping pill levels up to try control seizures that might be being
aggravated by other effects or 'home' treatments, you might inadvertently
work against each other, with your Son caught in the middle.
Try do what's best for him, if you can.. G./

Hi you might want to try EPA and DHA supplements that are distilled to
remove impurities like mercury (we pollute the seas with it) and
arachadonic acid, that may make epilepsy worse. I know Jarrow's MaxDHA is
distilled, and ethyl EPA has been found to be of benefit too, especially
when it is distilled from DHA - we can make DHA from EPA and vice versa
(some people have difficulty, though).
Good Luck,
