I don't have epilepsy. So I apologize right off for asking this question
here and if anyone feels this is insensitive feel free to say so or ignore
my post. But I was doing a Google search because I'm wanting to play some
Playstation 1 games. I don't have epilepsy, but I have anxiety and I'm
photo-sensitive in so far as I get tension headaches when sometimes things
are too flashy. So my question is, does anyone here have experience with
those little add-on monitors for the Playstation 1? And in terms of
refresh rate and photo-sensitivity are they better or worse for you than
playing games on a television.
Thanks.

I don't have a direct answer to your question, but some of the Computer
stores sell a 'Screen Guard' that's like a Glare Shield that will fit over a
computer screen to cut down on Glare... Now I don't know if what that does
is the Same as Refresh Rate issues. And I also don't know if it would
interfere too much with the Fun and Action stuff on those types of games if
it changed the screen colours as part of its operation.
But I wondered (if it's under 30 dollars, or if someone else here knows),
whether something like that could be bought to fit over a TV Screen too.
I've seen the 'screen guards' advertised from time to time in Computer
Fliers that come in the Newspaper. I'm not sure that's what they're
called, but it's something like that. HTH, G.R.

Reply to me from me! :-< I just thought too, *some Screens or Computer
Operating Systems have a way in Software where you can set the Refresh
rate?? I don't know if anything like that would help (still) if you're in
the UK? or somewhere like that which has different Electricity Voltage or
Frequency? than N.America, for example.
*But if you're on North America Voltage, maybe one of the geeks (I
typed Greeks!) around here will answer later and might be able to tell you
more. Some people only read the group 2-3x a week, so check back over next
few days. One of them might turn up (geeks)... G.R.

Howdy!
Don't take this as a fact written in stone, but I BELIEVE (remember that my
memory isn't worth diddly squat) that different people with photosensitivity
can be sensitive to different frequencies.

The NTSC Signalling that is involved with traditional Televisions is 30
frames per second. The actual flicker frequency does determine whether
there will be an impact on someone who is photo-strobe sensitive. I would
imagine that the newer (and more expensive) LCD-based televisions would have
little or no flicker despite the NTSC signalling for one reason....LCD does
not and cannot react as quickly as CRT or other technologies. Plus the
falloff rate will also make flicker appear to be non-existent. Now this
would not protect you from someone videoing something like say a strobe
light. You're still going to have risk from the actual show content. Same
thing holds true for gaming systems. Like something like HALO where you
have "lighting for effect" Flickering lights and things like that to help
create a sense of the environment you're playing in. In this case, your
choice of games will have an effect.
Hope this helps!
