Hi group.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience.  I
started a high protein - low carb diet.  My doctor recommended it
because of my high cholesterol.  For the past three nights I have had
terrible dreams.  The first one, my brother died in the dream, I woke up
very upset.  The second night I don't remember what the dream was about
I just remember waking up very distressed by the dream.  Last night it
was another nightmare.  My friends children were involved and something
about wild animals trying to get them.

I take phenobarbital at night so I usually sleep and don't really
remember my dreams.  This is all new to me with the bad dreams.  I was
wondering if the fact that I am eating such low carbohydrates may be
affecting my brain.

Other factors are that I haven't really been sleeping well anyway,
probably because of menopause, and my mother has been on my mind.
Trying to help take care of someone who has dementia can be very
distressful, especially when they get mad at you for looking after their
best interests.

Any thoughts?

I went low carb for several months last year and continue to maintain a
fairly low carb regimine.  I very rarely have bad dreams and when I do they
would be more closely identified with more immediate sources of stress.
Other than an upset stomach I am not sure that I'd blame low carbs for bad
dreams.

Hi Jedi and son.  Thanks for the reply.  I think you are right, I believe it
was the added stress of how my mother's actions were affecting me.  My sister
suggested I stay away from her for a few days and I've called and talked to my
sister (who my mother lives with) and she said she is acting better.  So that
probably helped my mental state.  Last night I didn't have a bad dream, and I
really expected to because I was watching a movie about a shark attack before I
went to sleep.

I guess I'll see how I do on this diet, but I don't think I'll be on it
forever.  I can't see doing without fruit in the long term.  My husband is on a
vegetarian diet, so we fix separate meals.  The hardest thing for me is
remembering to drink enough water and remembering to eat several times a day.

Hope your son is doing well this year.

Take care,
Julie
