Howdy,

Quick medical history: multi-focal seizure disorder for twenty-something
years, taking 800mg dilantin with 0.5mg ativan.  No other serious
medical deficits, no cardio problems, a little arthritis, sciatica, the
usual wear and tear for someone in their 40's.

Last few months I've noticed a progressive numbness that comes and goes
on the left side of my body.  Now it comes more than goes.  Talked to my
GP about it and he mentioned something about the sciatica but didn't
seem all that certain.  And how can I feel it over the entire left side
of my body when the sciatic nerve goes down the back of the thighs?

The odd thing is, the very first seizure that I can remember involved a
total loss of feeling and muscle control on the left side: face, arm,
leg, all the skin was numb, etc.  This event lasted for at least an
hour.  At first I thought I was having a heart attack but there was
absolutely no pain.  Even now I experience no chest, arm, or leg pain
with the numbness.  What bothers me about this is that it seems to be
progressive.

Before I run to a neuro, I'd like to know if anyone on ase has
experienced anything similar.

TIA,
RJ

I'd definitely get checked out by a neurologist.  I have numbness like what
you describe that's being caused by a low grade brain tumor.  While tumors
are rare they occur more frequently in people with a history of seizure
disorder.  Hope your problem is something else that can be corrected with
medication.

OUCH!

There's prob'ly not enough brain left in my skull to grow a tumour in.

Best of luck, my friend.

Hi John,

Going thru the same thing. My Doctor thought I was having a Stroke but it
stumped her. I'm on 300mg of dilantin and have been for 25 years.  I do
suspect it's the medication but as usual the Doctors won't listen and it's
hard to find concrete proof. The side effects of Dilantin do mention it with
prolonged use of the drug.

Not sure if it is though. Since I had a back injury in a car crash a few
years ago and that may be the cause .
I had the same numbness on the left as well.  I had also been on some potent
antiboitics after a bladder exam which gave me the same feelings.

I did see a neurologist and I'm going for tests. I have to wait 6 months for
my MRI (That's Canadian medicare for you)
and an EEG in two weeks.  I was also tested for Diabetes and heart problems.

Will keep in touch.
