Lamictal head

Dear guys and gals,

About Lamictal and family ignorance re: epilepsy.............

The confusion that Lamictal produces seems to have permanently altered my
life in one way but given me absolute seizure control as well. I've invited
my grown kids to read about the side effects but knowing them they won't.

Today my adult children organized a grueling family "meeting" over my
husband of 30 years leaving suddenly. I sat and thought about you all while
person after person accused me of *choosing* to be confused and forgetful.
Added to that I had to give a three month history about the antics of my
daughter's abusive husband and how we, the two sole women residing here now
should handle him. They expected me to memorize a list of 15 rules within
minutes. I thought, " This is a good example of how little my family knows
about the epilepsy meds and even epilepsy itself.

I remember my Neurologist telling me after three days of tests for all
aspects of memory that I probably had some damage to the hippocampus. That
was pre-Lamictal. I didn't bother bringing this up because they, the family,
would fail to understand.

I don't want to give up the Lamictal as it controls the szs completely and
it isn't as damaging to the liver as many of the other AED's. I have
suffered partial motor seizures with episodes of continual partials. I've
also had seizures with psychic, (as in emotional) effects.

The words, psychotic and abnormal were bandied about. Funny, I've worked as
a manager of entire county programs. I've even designed and implemented
them. How does a runaway psychotic do that??? Shithead kids!!

Any comments or sympathy will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for listening,
Cheryl

Howdy!

How about scheduling another "family meeting" and getting somebody from the
Epilepsy Foundation to come over and educate your family. A face-to-face Q/A
session.

If not somebody from the EFA, how about  (probably even a better idea) an
enlightened family member of SOMEBODY ELSE who has epilepsy.

They are more likely to believe it if the information comes from a third
party. (Some of it may even sink in!)

OTHER ALTERNATIVES:
See what your doctor has to say.
See if you can get THEIR doctors to educate them.

Thanks for the good ideas. Too bad my kids are so far apart. One was here
from Hawaii and he seemed to be the one running the ambush, I mean meeting.
:)  My neuro is two hundred miles from here. Next time we have any
gatherings I'm going to give them some literature. The nearest E. Foundation
to here is also about 200 miles. I feel I was just the target of some
intense emotions over my husband leaving. Everyone but me knew he had a
bimbo.........this from a man who revered celibacy  .....go figure.

It sounds like you have enough to go through without the kids adding to your
burden! They should be giving you emotional support, not causing you more
stress, especially now. What gives them the right to hand you "rules" to
follow? You certainly have all my sympathy. :)

Ah yes, the scapegoat, everyone's scapegoat. Now that they've released me
and sent me into the wilderness I think I'll e-mail their sins right back to
them. Is that what spam really is? :) :)

How dare they indeed!  I phoned my eldest and told him that we in fact have
not followed any of their so called rules  and that his sister and I are
well able to solve any problems with our without their interference and that
we would appreciate not being looked down upon. How did I as a mother create
such an inflexible and short sided man?  He still thought we started our
solutions because they fostered our communication. Brother. Rules my a.s.

As for sympathy, it is in short supply around our house. I'm the ballast for
my grandchildren and daughter  work on my grief in the dark of night. I'm
not having any seizures and that's success! You guys are great!
