I have been taking 230mg of Dilantin daily for years.  I called in for a
refill on my drugs last week.  When I went to pick them up, they didn't
have any 30mg.  I was told that it was because  the supplier refused to
supply it to that pharmacy.

I went home and called my neurologist and asked him what to do.  He told
me that I'll have to take 2 extra 100mg of Dilantin a week.  I was also
told that the supplier of 30mg of Dilantin doesn't make them any longer.

I just wanted to ask you people if you've heard anything about that?  My
body sometimes feels so weird because of it and it's going thru plenty
more auras.  Do you think that I'd better make an appointment  to see
the doctor because of this?

Thank you,

Linda

Rumour has it that on Thu, 22 Jan 2004 06:32:56 -0800 (PST),
pepsifizz@webtv.net (Linda G.) blurted out:

Sounds like it might be time to do a serum level.  A slight rescheduling
of your dosage shouldn't be noticeable unless you've been on the bottom
of the therapeutic range.  And even then...

Or it might just be time to up your dosage.  Over the years I've gone
from 300 to varying between 800 and 900mg daily.  If dilantin is the
only thing you take for your seizures, it may be time to piggyback
another med.  I've had good luck with ativan (lorazepam).

And anytime you think you should see the doc about your seizures, you're
probably right.

Best of luck,
RJ

You might also talk with your neurologist about
switching  to Phenytek 200 mg capsules. Sometimes
patients can lower the dose by taking an AED in a
time release format.

I take 700 mg Dilantin daily, and during times I am sick and think it is
necessary, can increase that to 800 mg daily because at 700 mg daily, my
blood level is at the very low end of therapeutic and that doesn't seem to
be enough during illnesses.  Dilantin has a long half-life in the body, so
the schedule they have you on would work for a lot of people, however, it
might not work for other people.   I mean, for some people, or perhaps
during specific events (like for myself when I get sick), splitting the dose
might be needed because our blood level is fluctuating too much.  Yeah, it
would be a good idea to pop into the doctor's office and talk to your doctor
because your dosage or the timing might need to be adjusted.  They will
probably do blood work to see if the drug is at therapeutic level.
