I am epileptic. I can't drive, work, smoke, drink, and as most, have to take
medicine the rest of my life to control it. I am currently on Medicade and
they've recently climbed up my a.s about the amount of money (from parents
help) going in and out of my checking account to pay my ungodly prescription
bills per month. I heard from a relative about paypal and that he would xfer
money to and from it as I needed bypassing my bank account. So my question
is, would Medicade have any way of finding out about paypal? Any help
appreciated. thanks.

Howdy!

I got a lump sum back payment from SSD and that disqualified me from
Medicaid (in spite of my $700+/month bill at the pharmacy!)

I don't know how it works in your state, but here in NY you must have less
than $3000 (I think) in liquid assets. They determine what the poverty line
is, and then what ever income you get that exceeds the poverty line is your
spend down!

I had to transfer all of my funds into my folks name and get them to
withdraw funds for me as I need them. (Good thing I get along well with my
folks.)

I wouldn't trust putting money in PayPal!... If the state ever found out
about it you would probably have to pay back every cent that MedicAid ever
payed out for you and they would probably slap a felony charge on you for
either fraud or grand larceny!

If anything, how about opening a bank account in Canada or in some other
foreign country?

One thing that I have been seriously considering is putting all of my money
into bearer bonds and sticking them in my safe deposit box. If you can get
somebody else to buy them for you, your name will never appear in the
transaction. Since they are bearer bonds, anybody can cash them in.

re: smoking... I have all sorts of burn scars from cigarettes.

Ever consider snuff? It's cheap, it doesn't cause cancer, why heck - one of
my doctors even recommended that I continue using it since it works so well
for my congested sinuses!

See the snuff page on my site!

Sheesh,

Y'all need to come to New Zealand. Here the government HEAVILY subsidises
all medications. For three months of maximum doses of epilim and tegretol, I
pay  NZ $15.00  that's about US $9.15.

Cheers,
Darryl.

5 hours (woohoo!!) seizure free and lost count.

Well, Howdy, Dave!

When I first saw your post, I was appalled at your description and
attitude regarding snuff. As a card-carryin' hothead, my initial
response to you flamed you so bad that you'd beg for a vacation in
hell to cool off.
However, I did visit your site to see what kind of nutcase I was
dealing with (and as a card-carrying (this time, literally!) nutcase
myself, I can size up another one pretty damned well), but I was
pleasantly surprised at it's quality.
I came away seeing you not as a nut, but as an educated man with an
excellent vocabulary (and who can even read and write Arabic TOO!
Neat! (and umm..not to mention politically timely))   ;-)
Oh... except that "eustation" is spelled "eustachian", but hey, who
REALLY reads this stuff anyway....  ;-)

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, here is my objection rewritten in
relative softshoe...  ;-)

>Ever consider snuff? It's cheap, it doesn't cause cancer,

If you'll forgive me, this is a deceptive half-truth. The half you
left out is that snuff doesn't cause LUNG cancer.
But ALL tobacco contains carcinogens, and snuff CAN cause sinus
cancer, just as "chaw" (chewing tobacco) can cause mouth and jaw
cancers. While the risks of these types of cancers MAY be less than
the risk of lung cancer from smoking, the risks are there all the
same, and should be acknowledged.
Also, though it may seem contrary to common sense, cigarettes, chaw,
and snuff are apparently equally addictive, according to some
academics.
BTW, I am neither an abolitionist nor a goodie two shoes here. I
personally smoke like a chimney, hate the fact that I do, and for 41
years have had too little willpower to change it. Maybe someday...
;-)
I am however, a staunch advocate of informed consent.

>why heck - one of my doctors even recommended that I continue
>using it since it works so well for my congested sinuses!

I suppose I could accept that it MIGHT "help" in a perverse and
sereptitious manner, but if any "doctor" ever told me that, I would
SERIOUSLY start examining that "Doctor"'s credentials. Remember,  50%
of all doctors graduated in the bottom half of their class (I love
that one. It's both absolutely true, and almost universally initially
disbelieved. So much for math skills taught in public schools)
Anyhow, Snuff, just like cocaine and other powdered-solid nasal
inhalants used routinely, will slowly eat away at your sinus tissues,
thereby reducing the body's ability to produce nasal mucous.
For my part, I'd MUCH rather suffer an occ    asional runny nose,
maintain my reasonably accurate sense of smell, and have a voice that
doesn't sound like I'm talking from inside a cardboard box. Oh, and
did I mention that nasal hairs and nasal mucous are nature's PRIMARY
front-line defense against bacterial aerosol propogation?

<Climbing down off soapbox now>

So, other than that, I like your web site. A lot. Especially your
over-the-edge stuff, like your "bizarre" section (as an aside, I'm 55,
but I like anime and some cartoons, my favorite of all being Jackie
Chan's adventures on Saturday mornings down here in Sout' Joisey. [I
live right across the river from Philly in a town called Erial]
Anyway, even though it's scary to think that there are people who
actually live and breathe that stuff as though it were some form of
reality (and scarier yet that these people can vote <shudder>), I just
love reading stuff like that. That chastity belt page is interesting,
too. Some of the pics are kind of sexy, actually, in a perverse sort
of way (Jeeezz.. my personality kinks just keep on leaking out!), but
one of them reminded me of the old joke with the punchline "Wait!
Wait! You left me the wrong key!"  ;-)

And the VNS thingy...weird....I didn't have time to peruse it, but I
glanced over it a bit. You freely acknowledge (as does the
manufacturer as well) that it doesn't control seizures completely or
perfectly, so I'm naturally a bit curious regarding the cost:benefit
ratio: In your opinion does it offer 20 grand worth of relief of any
sort in your case?

Cheers,

   Mike

Just because you're paranoid does NOT mean that nobody is out to get you.
Dave ???? - 05 Jan 2004 11:05 GMT
Howdy Mike!

Re: VNS - It has done (to the best of my knowledge) ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for
me. There are some cases in which seizure activity increased after the
device was activated (something the manufacturer fails to mention in their
statistics.)  I turned it off for two years because it did nothing except to
ruin my singing voice. Being an analyst and following in the true scientific
method, I had it turned on again after I had been diagnosed with - and
started therapy for - sleep apnea. So... no more Doo Wop (Mr. Bass man!), no
more Barbershop, no more church choir (sigh...)

I figured that since sleep is such a basic factor in epilepsy, I should try
it again since my variables had changed and I'm getting some REM sleep these
days.

Thanx for the spelling. The word has been altered on the  site.  I only said
that I can rite, I nevur said that I know how to spel!

******************
ON MY SNUFF SOAP BOX:

I think that my doc was working on the "Do no harm" principle. This was
extremely convenient to him since my therapy worked and his didn't! My
problem wasn't with a runny nose, quite the opposite! A fully deviated
septum and constant congestion is a bad combination. Snuff opens up my
sinuses and allows me to clear the stuff out by blowing my nose often!  (I
use mentholated snuff so it's sorta' like sticking a dab of mentholatum just
under the nose and leaving it there all day.)

Nasal snuff is fermented tobacco (the good European stuff is anyway.) This
may get rid of the carcinogens or it may not -- I don't know.

I never said that it wasn't addictive, but what the heck - everybody needs
to have at least ONE vice! Besides, even with the stimulation that I get
from my nicotine and my daily consumption of 2 to 3 liters of regular
coffee, I STILL sleep 12 hours a day!

As for nose rot -- snuff leaves slight film on the mucus membranes. It
totally eleminated my hay fever and I can say with a fair amount of
certainty that it is probably less corrosive to my nose than the city air.

Funny thing is, my sense of smell has IMPROVED since I started taking a
pinch of snuff. This is a total mystery to me!

Re: "Snuff can cause sinus cancer JUST AS..." Where did you get that
information from? Everybody who I have talked to that made that statement
made a faulty logical conclusion and accepted it as a medical fact. The
reason chew causes gum and jaw cancer is because of a chemical reaction that
takes place between the tobacco and the saliva (no saliva in the nose or
sinuses.)

All of the really bad tobacco reactions (that I'm aware of) are due to
chemical reaction with saliva, inceneration of the chemically treated
tobacco or inceneration of the chemically treated paper.

We snuffers have done EXTENSIVE (pretty close to exhaustive) research and we
have NEVER come across any such finding. The closest report I have ever
found was written by a doctor in England in 1720 who emphatically stated
that snuff caused nose cancer. He later recanted and admitted that the
article was a complete fabrication written because he was pissed off at his
local tobacconist!
