I have had both tonic clonic and petit mal since I was 12 or so. I am now 41
and not under complete control. I am on 2.5 gms of Valproic acid and 800
tegretol. My petit mals have always been staring spells. If I was walking I
would slow down but this AM I had a very strange experience. It was as if my
muscles in my body were relaxing. Most notably my jaw and my knees and my
brain got foggy for a moment. I was very tired and am trying to switch back
to a normal schedule after working nights. I know this sounds more like
narcolepsy than epilepsy. The incident took all of 1 to 2 seconds. Looking
back I have had these occurrences when lying in bed prior to sleep but much
shorter.

Any ideas?

Thanks Mike

I think it may be because I am often sleep deprived and REM sleep is
breaking through, which causes paralysis.

Look at "aware sleep paralysis" (if you want to "curl your toes",
look at this site: http://www.arts.uwaterloo.ca/~acheyne/S_P.html).
If this is what I may experience a dozen times a day (often for long
periods), I'm very glad I have no imagination (I have no hallucinations
with it...;-)!
