g'day mike,
yes it can aid weight loss. i found that when i started taking it and on
each occasion my dosage was raised it made me very nauseous but this passed
after a few days each time. unfortunately some people can't tolerate it
because it can cause depression.

I felt very nauseous on this. I lost so much weight and I never felt like
eating. I looked good though. I wish I could go on it to lose my pregnancy
weight.

Pablo, are there any requirments that you can remember that would stop a
person from going to topamax? I am wanting to switch but have heard some bad
news about this drug.

I also heard it is extremely expensive is that true?

g'day tim,
there were no requirements when i switched onto it, it was great for
controlling my seizures and for weight loss but unfortunately it played
havoc with my memory and mood. you probably will be luckier with it. i can't
say too much about the price of it as we have a pharmaceutical benefits
scheme in australia which reduces the costs of many therapeutic medicines to
about AU$23.00 a script. one thing that is not uncommon amongst people who
use topomax is a tingling sensation in the tongue, this is caused by an
inflammation of the facial nerve, but this can be counteracted by taking
vitamin B6. hope it works out for you, good luck.

Tim, I took Topomax 7 years ago for a short time. Totally lost my appetite,
lost 20 lbs., became very depressed and had bleeding gums. Enough for me. I
called my Doc and said get me off this stuff. I know a lot of people have good
experiences with this drug but unfortunately I was not one of them. Since it
was so long ago, I can't remember how much it cost but it was condsiderably
more expensive than the drugs I was on. Good Luck, Vicki

I'm in Canada where drugs are cheaper, but it was costing me a lot - over
$150 per month. I only stayed on it for 18 months because the side effects
became intolerable - memory, mood and verbal skills all deteriorated.

How does this drug compare to Dilantin for memory and mood supression?

I'm more depressed and memory is worse with Topamax,
but I'm also fifteen years older.  I felt the best on Lamictal,
as far as depression and memory, but the rash got bad rash
and that had to be stopped.  Of all the drugs they tried,
Topamax has been about the best, and if I do get a seizure,
it's just in my sleep now.

I am on Mysoline and Dialantin right now and I am sleepy 20 minutes after I
wake up in the morning. They cannot get it theraputic. They keep raising the
Mysoline and it is kicking me in the butt. I am going to have to find
something different. Also I am not controlled either. I have what I have
always been told are motor seizures daily. The last Grand Mall I had has
been many many years ago.

Other than Mysoline and Dialantin what do you good people recommend that has
worked well for you? Also I have been on Tegratol and Depakote and neither
one worked.

I had been on Phenobarbital and, for reasons that are not important here, I was
switched over to Mysoline in the form of Primidone.  It's only a 2-day
switchover as they are more or less equivalent. Mysoline metabolizes into
Phenobarbital although it's supposed to have anti-epileptic effects of it's own.
I found that it made me feel weird and went back to the old way after ~3 days.
Maybe you could try Phenobarbital as a replacement therapy as a test? It's the
cheapest drug I can imagine! ~$12 for a month's supply!

I was on Topamax (25mg/day, with addition of 25mg/day each week,
trying for 100-400mg/day for various episode types [epilepsy not
diagnosed]) for only three weeks (25mg/day, then 50, then 25, then 0)
since I experienced moderate depression, considerable mental confusion,
and serious speech problems while on it (nothing else except periods
of feeling "stupid"). I spent about 10 days "climbing the walls" coming off
it, though (and speech problems and hyper-activity have remained after
almost two weeks of being off it). It appears to work well for many, and
be "benign", but I couldn't take it (though it appeared in advance to be
the best of three possible choices...).
