Hi - I've got something I've been wondering about.
I quite recently swopped to topirimate and am
weaning myself off carbamazepine.  It controls my
seizures much better.  The dose was increased a
few weeks ago and I experienced some tingling in
my hands and feet for a few days and then it went
away.  Lots of mornings when I wake up I
unconsciously stretch before I'm properly awake
and I have severe cramp in my calfs and feet which
make sure I'm then fully awake!  I never use to
get this, but it doesn't say that cramp is a
side-effect anywhere.  It's not that important in
the scheme of things I suppose - I can put up with
it - but do you think it's a side-effect?  Any
similiar cramps on topirimate?  Cheers  Ali.

Leg cramps are often caused by potassium deficiency.  Bananas are a good
source of potassium.  My husband eats one a day for a week or so if he
wakes up with leg cramps.

I've been taking topiramate for five years, without any problem.
Presently I'm decreasing topiramate, (and I have a new treatment:
Keppra) because it was not efficient anymore: I crashed in my car last
summer during a crisis! I just could say that it seems to be a good
medecine for someones, but explaining my case the doctor said to me
that the problem was due to a "reorganisation" of my nervous system
because I am quite young. In fact every case is different, and you
shall consider the evolution of your situation etc... It is quite
difficult, but I understood that it's really necessary!

I understand what you're saying JR - different
drugs work for different people.  A lot of people
are fine on carbamazepine but despite ever
increasing doses I felt it wasn't doing the
business for me which is why I wanted to try
something else.  I think the best policy is to
treat everyone as an individual and find what
works for them.  I'm sorry to hear you had such a
horrific experience with topiramate.  I will stick
with it as it seems to control my seizures (which
are reasonably infrequent and only partials
anyway) very well.  I haven't had any on the new
dose but can't get rid of the tingly fingers and
toes!  Gonna try more bananas as suggested by Liz.
Take care..
Ali
