I have been on lamictal for about 3 months now, after switching from
sodium valproate (depakote).  So far, so good - no more hair falling
out, lost some weight, seizures controlled pretty completely (except
if I miss a dose).  I'm on a VERY low dose; I kept increading to 200
mg/day, but at some point I cut that back to just 100 mg every night -
and it still seems to be working OK.  However, i am experiencing some
strange symptoms in the past 2 months that I am having trouble
deciding - are they side effects of the Lamictal, or side effects of
the low dose (ie, the seizure activity is not OCMPLETELY controlled).
I am having a lot of trouble with early-morning waking; often, i am
totally soaked in sweat, mostly originating around my hairline and
neck.  I also notice, as I lie awake on these early, early mornings,
that there are some very faint muscle twitches in my calves and feet -
frequent, but nowhere near the violence of the myoclonic jerks that
used to precede my GMs.  Does anyone else have similar reaction to
lamotrigine?  Muscle twitches, night sweats, increased anxiety?  These
would be a small price to pay in terms of side effects, but I am
worried they may instead be a sign that I should up my dose a bit.

thanks for any input!!

Best,

Megan

I've been on 300mgm/day lamotrigine (Lamictal) for years now. My husband
realised before I did that each 100mgm tablet not only made me get
sleepier and sleepier for the first hour and a half but, when I was coming
out of it I would be so 'awake' that it would be difficult to go to sleep
if it was my usual time.

This means that I try to take my bedtime pill about 1/2hr before I lie
down and nearly always wake up a couple of hours later.

Wrt anxiety: it's difficult to say if it's influenced by lamotrigine
because other things have been worrying me but, in general, I have been
more and more anxious for many years.

Thanks for the input, Chris.  Interestingly, since I first posted this
message, I may have gotten the answer to my question, after all.  I
had a GM seizure this weekend.  It was a really small one, according
to my boyfriend - short, seemingly mild, and I really wasn't as "out
of it" as I generally am - no migraine, either.  It was, however,
preceded by a lot of those same "twitches" I had written about.  So it
looks like I may be going back to the full prescribed dosage after
all, since that was the first seizure I think I've ever had that
wasn't preceded by me forgetting a dose completely.  Ah, well.

It will be interesting to see whether some of the SE's that I was
describing intensify, or subside.
