sleep deprived EEG

Hi All

I had a pretty nasty seizure in work last Tuesday (I work as a violinist in
a professional symphony orchestra) and was taken into hospital where I
stayed for a few days as the seizure was followed by another 4 in as many
hours.

Now the docs want to do a sleep deprived EEG. I am not allowed to sleep at
all for 24 hours before the EEG, but on my piece of paper I am just asked to
show for the EEG at 8am. Does anyone else have experience of this? I would
have thought it better to go into hospital in the evening and spend the time
there not taking up a bed, but just being in a medical environment. Who is
to say that the seizures they are trying to provoke won't show till after
8am :oS I am interested in hearing what people might have experienced with
regards to these sleep deprived EEGs

Thanks
Anna

Yes.

It would be a good idea to get someone to drive you there and back.  They aren't
necessarily going to try to provoke a seizure, at least they didn't for me.
What they did want me to do was alter my brain pattern by relaxing so much I was
on the verge of falling asleep, but they told me NOT to fall asleep.  That's
hard to do when they place you in a comfy chair and put a warm blanket over
you.  Anyway, the sleep-deprived test didn't work for me anyway; the EEG was
normal.  They caught my seizures at a later time on a portable monitor.

I was told both things. It might provoke a sz. and this non -sleep, yet very
tired state would be recorded. In my case I didn't have any unremarkable
brain activity and didn't get close to sleeping either. They had me on an
uncomfortable gurney on my back which hurt my shoulders . Needless to say,
it wasn't conducive to sleep.

Last time I had an EEG they actually wanted me to sleep and said I was a
"good girl" for doing so. But are you saying that that is not what they want
me to do this time? Last time I wasnt even sleep deprived :oS I can fall
asleep pretty much anywhere anytime lol And I know for sure that tiredness
is one of my major triggers.

I have not heard of portable monitors. How do they work? I am surprised they
didnt use one of those when I had 4 seizures in hospital last week :oS
They say dont sleep for 24 hours before the EEG, which sounds a lot to me.

On a bit of a tangent, has anyone  experienced left (or right) hand-side
weakness after a seizure? I seem to be showing a lot of signs of it and the
docs are a bit baffled as my CTs and MR are clear. But one neuro told me it
must be the aftermath of seizures. Yesterday morning as I was walking to the
bus stop I noticed that I couldnt lift my left foot properly off the ground.
it kind of dragged along. I made a point of noticing it this morning and it
was fine, no problems in lifting it. I currently live alone (boyfriend
joining me here in Denmark from the UK in two weeks Hooraaaaaah) so I dont
know if I have seizures in the night. But might this be a sign??

Sorry for the long winded message

Hi Anna

The portable EEG is actually an ambulatory Digitrace EEG. It's
a small unit that that records your brainwave patterns for periods
of 24,48, or 72hours (depending on doctor's orders). You can have
the leads placed on you as you usually do, then take it home and
return in 24, 48 or 72 to have it removed. It allows the neurologist
to record brainwave activity continiously, and has been very useful
in picking up abnormal activity during sleep for many patients. It's
a much less expensive alternative to inpatient EEG Video Monitoring,
although you can't be weaned off AEDs during the ambulatory EEG.

ago. it was just for not sleeping for 12 full hours
and i had 2 seizures during it when i was finally
able to take it. i have been told by neurologocal
doctors and staff associated with neurology that sleep deprivation
causes seizures and the doc-
tor can look at the seizure activity (if any) is at
that time present. good luckanna. i will be pray-

I phoned up the hospital to enquire about the possibility of be being in the
hospital the night before the EEG. Said I would be happy just to sit in a
relatives room watching tv or something, that I didnt intend to take up a
bed (what would be the point if I am not allowed to sleep!) The lady on the
phone was probably the most unsympathetic woman I have come across in a long
time. And she is supposed to be the person with all the contact to the
epilepsy patients in the out-patients unit. A bit disheartening if that is
how she treats everyone. Could easily make me want to change my hospital!
but at least I persuaded her to ask a doctor.
Her response to where I live was "oh but that is close to the hospital,
shouldnt take long by ambulance if you have a seizure"
I had just told her that I live alone!

Oh well, I will see what the doctor says. I just felt like having a rant
about that secretary cum nurse person :oS

There's no point in ranting to us. Tell the doctor. If no-one complains they
won't know about it and it will continue.
