I think I have symptons similar to epilepsy but do not lose consciousness. I
have recently heard that it is possible to be epileptic without losing
consciousness. My neurologist has never used the term to describe my symptons.
Says I have vestibular problems which cause migraines. However he has
prescribed clonazepam (Rivotril) and propranolol (Inderal). These keep the
migraine fairly well under control. Before taking these drugs I experience the
following symptons and then had a migraine.
I react to bright light, white or neon, flashing light & disco lighting,
looking out side car windows while travelling, sudden turning, overhead fans
turning under lights, etc.
I start to feel disorientated, facial numbness begins extending down to
throat. Mouth sometimes twists. Cannot speak coherently; words slurred,
cannot form sentences as brain cannot find words needed. Sometimes hands
contort. Breathing becomes rapid but I try to control the breathing it as I
know episode will not last long (normally 1-2 minutes). Need to sleep after
episode and tired/out of it the next day. These episodes happen more if I'm
tired or have had to concentrate on a conversation for an extended time. I
need to sleep before going out at night or having people over.
Have family history (cousins) with epilepsy and my father had same problems
as I do.
Would like some feedback to find correct diagnosis.

Hello! This could be Narcolepsy, but I am pretty sure that you are
having partial seizures because your symptoms match the symptoms of
them. The fact that you have a family history alone indicates this.
Here is a Wikipedia article that may help you
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temporal_lobe_epilepsy and aside from the
Epilepsy Foundation's website, there is http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/types_seizures
but you can go directly to http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/seizure_simplepartial
to read about simple partial seizures. Make sure you read the bit
about psychic seizures. Another thing to look into is Reflex Epilepsy
which can be found by doing a simple Google search.
As for your neurologist, he is there to help you and CAN help, but no
one but you knows yourself better, so it's a good thing you have
considering another source of symptoms. Good luck!
