I had Brain Surgery but it didn't work or help. But part of the problem
is after the doctor's started the surgery they didcovered that I had
small seizures coming from the other side of my brain so even if the
surgery had worked I would still have had seizures. Good luck in
whatever you decide. Mike H

Mike, didn't they do tests to see if the seizures had spread to the
other side before the surgery? I haven't done any ot the testing yet
but they did say that I may no longer be a candidate. Do you mind if I
ask how old you are? I have temporal lobe seizures and supposedly they
are very hard to control. Are they able to control your seizures now
with meds? Take Care. Jackie

Jackie I am 54 years old and have had Epilepsy for 22years. I had no
head injury or family history. I woke my wife up one night shaking and
she called EMS. when the Tech walked into the bedroom the first thing he
asked my wife was if I had Epilepsy,When she said no he loaded me on a
cart and took me to the hospital. My first Neuro confirmed that it was
Epilepsy and put me on Dilantan. After a couple of years it was
increased to 500mgs but did no good. I changed Neuros but the one I went
to his speciality was head aches. I didn't know what to do because all
he would do for me was give me EKG's when I would go seehim. Finally I
joined the local support group and met one of the best epilepsy neuros
in town (I live in Louisville, Ky) I started going to see him and he
kept trying to find the right drugs to stop the seisures. Either they
wouldn't work or I would have a reaction to them. Then we thought about
trying the VNS and that didn't work. Finally we decided on Surgery. At
the time the surgery was scheduled I didn't have anything hahhening in
Left Temprode Lobe. So Neuro and the Surgeon went ahead with the
surgery. Well about a day after I had a Stroke and that is when they
found what they called mini seisures coming from my Left side. So the
surgery didn't work. Now I am on 1200mgs Carbatrol, 20mgs Lexapro and
2mgs Clonapin. I have been on this group of meds so lonf that I think
that my body is starting to get used to them because my seisures have
not stopped and may be increasing but I am having most of my seisures at
night, They still scare and worry my wife because when I have one I roll
over into my pillow face down. My good neuro had to leave town but he
had an intern in his office who saw me during my visits so now I go see
her. A little personal stuff. Kentucky you have to be seisure free
90days to get your driver license back. Now I headr that the CDL has
moved their time of being seisure free from 1year to 4years to make it
worse when I developed Epilepsy I was a delivery driver for the local
Coca-Cola out-let. So I could no longer drive after19years. They did
find me a job in the plant UNTIL I had a couple seisures and the Big-
Wigs found out I was still working there. Then I was told I would Have
to leave because I was a danger to the people I was working with and
myself because I was working around moving equipment. Thanks for
letting me let off steam. I have been out of work for 10years and

I found this on Milwaukee's CraigList in the Psychology Forum. There
were no replies...
"I had that "scar tissue", plus my amydala & hippocampus removed, about
the size of 3/4 of a Twinkie, from my right temporal lobe 3.5 years ago
at Froedtert. The scar is virtually unnoticeable. I'm now sz free, but
I've got those amygdala & hippocampus "problems" now. Anybody else been
there, done that? I used to get "unstuck in time" pre-op, but it didn't
last as long or often. Now the memories are deeper, longer, more scary.
Yeah, they're only lousy, real lousy; the carve yourself with broken
glass, curl up into a fetal ball on the floor, or sit & sob in the
closet, lousy. Wanna trade coping skills?"

Wow! I just found your response I really suck at this computer stuff.
So they took out your temporal lobe to control seizures. Tell what the
amygdala problems are. Did they say this might happen? I'm so glad to
have read your post because I get those "horrible grims" and they
thought removing the lobe would stop that as well as the seizures.
I'm so glad I found you because no one else understands. I tell my
brother its like the worse acid trip someones ever been on. Not that
either of us have taken acid but we have all read or heard about "bad
trips". What meds are you on? Hows your memory? Did removing the
hipocampus affect it? What do you mean by "unstuck in time" Please
write soon. I hope I'll be able to find the post. My grims will be
coming soon I can feel them. Jackie

People who have "the surgery" on the right temporal lobe have a worse
time with bad memories being vivid and haunting. The surgery was a
success; no more seizures and my memory is greatly improved. They want
you on AED drugs for at least year post-op. I was on lamictal for almost
a full year but got stomach problems (dry heaves) from it, and didn't go
any other drugs. My neuro was in on my decision. I was abused as a kid,
so I had rage/anger/trust issues. You don't remember the events
themselves, but the memories associated with them are intense. I
eventually worked through everything with the aid of my wife. The only
meds I'm on are 50mg seroquel nightly. BTW, the blood pressue drug
Doxazosin (sp?) is used to treat PTSD nightmares. I was in a study of a
drug to treat depression & ptsd called ****mine. .5mg/kilo; IV. If
you're able to get a hold of some, you have to do some personal meta-
reprograming, accentuating all the positive things in your life, how
lucky you are, how loved you are, and that you're in control. Yeah, and
enjoy the float. And I ain't a druggie.

Hi, Are you the author from the Craigs list post? I actually had a
great life. Even junior high was good. The bad feelings have gone from
being a little bummed out to paranoia. It's only during the
breakthroughs. When I was on kepra I started to say weird things like"
There's the man thats going to put the spell on me" . When I came out
of the seizure my mom would have the most bizarre look on her face.
Finally she told me some of the crazy things I said. ( this was in my
30's) I assured her I didn't believe in magic or know anything about
black magic. We actually got a pretty good laugh out of it and I asked
the neuro to take me off kepra before my mom had an exorcism done.
There really is that horrible feeling of a person being there and I've
seen his face a few times during the seizures. I went from being lucid
but feeling strange during the seizures when I was young to losing
time x1min in my late 20's to losing time on the real world but being
visited by unwanted voices and faces. I haven't told the neurologist
about the person or the voices because I know they'll read something
into it and there's nothing there. I think it's that part of the
brain, like you said, that holds all those scary thoughts wether you
had them or saw them in a movie. Joan of Arc some say had temporal
lobe seizures and would you say her euphoria was from her perfect
childhood. I'm referring to my situation. I'm sorry about what
happened to you in the past and I hope resolving that helps you move
on to a happier life. Why is your memory better? Is it because you're
not on so many meds? I was afraid removing the hippocampus would make
it harder to remember. I never thought of the bad thoughts getting
worse after surgery I was afraid I might come out flat. I'm kind of an
animated person and I love to laugh(thank God). I've worked with
people who have had minor surgery and maintained normal cognitive
skills but their affect was very flat ie the tone of their voice and
the look in their eyes. I've also worked with people who had
occasionally breakthroughs of grand mal seizures and they were
starting to show signs of cognitive deficits. It doesn't look good
anyway you slice it. Hope you have a good day. If you are the author
from craigs list your description "carve yourself up with broken glass
and curl up in a fetal ball" is priceless. Jackie
