I had febral convulsions from age of 9 months to 6 years. during this
period i ws prescribed Gardenal 200mg for treatment. During 5 years to
7 years of my age, i did not have any seizures. Hence from 7 year,  i
was not on any medication for 5 years. When I was 12 years old, i had
non febrile convulsion and hence my neurologist put me on
Tegritol(200mg). After i was 16 years old, I had no history of
seizures. When I was 26 years old, I was pregnant. I discussed the
same with new neurologist (as the one who treated me had expired long
back). He put me on lamitrogine (Lamitor - Torrent Pharmaceuticals)
starting at 25 mg and increasing the same to 200 mg per day. I
delivered my baby daughter without any problems. However, before
delivering baby my neurologist did not ask me not to breastfeed. Since
I leave in small town, away from metroplotian city where my neurology
hospital i could not make to hospital after 1 and half months period
after delivery. I met him after 3 and half months when he told me that
I should not breastfeed my baby and asked me continue Lamitor for 6
more months and that he will decide after any EEG whether to continue
mediation till I decide on second pregnancy. Now while searching on
net, I find that the drug lamitrogine passes through breast milk and
that if it is used during  first trimester of pregnancy there are
chances that baby may be delivered with cleft pallette.

hence  i feel is it necessary to continue with the drug if I have had
no seizures for past 10 years ?  can I move back to  Tegritol ? Is
that aleast required ? what are the chances that my baby is affected ?
I do not see any side effects in my baby as of now.

I experience dizziness, loss of energy and headache since use of
Lamitor. I thought that they were because of increased workload at
home, office and pregnancy. now I realise that lamitor might be the
reason behind it.

I have done my Engineering in Electronics & Telecommunication Engg and
passed the same in First Class and am working as an IT professional. I
have no visible disorder   (leave apart biploar disorder)    and EEG
shows some sporadic spikes. Apart from that there are no problems with
me. I had gone to neurologist just to ensure that Tegritol does not
harm my unborn baby and now I feel I may have harmed much more. Just
thanks to God, that I was busy with work and hence met doctor  after I
had completed first trimester. While its true that he started Lamitor
after 4 and half months of pregnancy, I feel that I have been cheated
by my neurologist and I am worried about the ill effects of
lamitrigine that might have affected my baby in long run. Should I
have second opinion?

Also my baby has completed her 6 months and is nearing to complete 7
months. She has  not started teething yet. Could that be side effect
of Lamitor ? However, she has started crawling and just today she
tried to stand with little help.

Please help me

Hi. You should ask the Doctor for referral to a Neurologist.  I
haven't taken Lamictal? and am Male, but my *Tegretol bottle says-->
"Tell the Dr. if you plan to become Pregnant".
I think the drugs get passed through your blood to the unborn baby,
and when they're born they can have withdrawal from not having the
Medicine any longer.   I don't know whether there are other things,
like bone and brain development, that can be affected also.)
Some of the pills also can affect development of the unborn baby.
(I *think Tegretol can affect bone development *before the baby is
born.   But *I'm not a Doctor.)
If your Doctor can't help (doesn't know? ) which pills might
affect unborn children, you could ask the Pharmacy where you get your
pills if they have information or a website for any pills you use. If
there's an Epilepsy Association near you, you could also call them to
see if they have websites that are up to date on this.

If it were *me, I'd consider trying to find another Doctor or go to
see a (new?) Neurologist  before another pregnancy. The one you had
doesn't know enough about how some of these pills can affect unborn
children, so is not up to date enough.
Some of the women on the group can hopefully help too over next few
days.      G./
