Hi, I've been taking Depakote ER for 6 days now.  My dr. started me at
500mg twice a day which I think was too much.  I've experienced
blurred vision, being very sleepy, can't focus, can't see straight all
the time, confusion, dreaming and not knowing for sure if they are
real.

Has anyone else experience any of these?  Should I be getting off the
meds? I take Lamictal as well, but it isn't controlling my seizures
well enough.

If these are "normal" side effects, how long does it take until they
go away? Or, will they go away?

Thanks,

You should be on the phone to that doctor's office demanding some explanation
and guidance.

It wasn't Depakote ER, but I've been prescribed an OD of a drug that was new to
be and I had all your symptoms

They probably won't go away until the dose is adjusted. Give your doctor a call!

I agree with 'partials' -- you might as well tell the Dr. about it.
Some of the medications can take several days to get used to and some
of above symptoms are similar to what I had with Tegretol (for
one).    It *might be something that should clear within a day or two,
but he might also want to start decreasing any other pills you take if
they could be conflicting.
***Don't Promptly stop taking any anti ep medications without
speaking to the Dr. and getting guidance.  Several of them (like my
Tegretol)  can produce side effects (like more szrs.) if they are just
Stopped abruptly.   (When I reduce a set of 2 tablets about 5 years
ago, that part was spaced over about 4 weeks, and the newer pill was
started up (gradually too) are about week 2.)
Let us know how you make out.  Lots of people read here who are
too shy to post but still get value from our experiences and
successes.   G./

I was on Depakote ER monotherapy for five years.  I now am on Lamictal
monotherapy. I would difinitely follow up with your doctor to be sure
about  taking Depakote and Lamictal at the same time!! The chances of
getting the Lamictal rash are doubled while on Depakote at the same
time. I never experienced the side effects you mention but I was on
1000 m.g. twice a day for most of the time I took Depakote ER.
Although regular blood tests are not necessary with Lamictal, to have
a  theraputic level for Depakote requires regular blood tests until
you get to and maintain a level between 50 and 100. Your side effects
may or may not go away once you reach a theraputic level which can
take weeks. In any event you should consult your doctor to find out
exactly what he wants you to do and to tell him about your side
effects. I don't think you could reach a theraputic level in only six
days, but depending on your weight and your dose of Lamictal it would
be best to ask your doctor.
I found Depakote ER to be a great drug for seizure control so make
sure you consult your doctor so you can experience the benefits of the
medication. All the best,
Jim

Thanks for all your advice up to this point.  Per my doctor I started
250 mg once a day last night...for a week. Then, will be 250 twice a
day for a week....then 250 in the morn and 500 at night....etc until I
get to 1000 twice a day.  Hopefully before I get to 1000 twice a day
I'll be fine and not need that much medicine as I'm on Lamictal
already.
