Topamax and loss of weight - not loss of appetite, but what then ?

Have lost 6-7 kg (12-14 pounds) in 3 months on Topamax,
even though counteracting by eating more than before.
Have now reached a weight level lower than the last 10-12 years.

Ergo it is not the appetite, which makes Topamax loose my
weight, as my doctor tells me.
What is it then ?  Increased metabolism ?

Pete.

Hi Pete, nice to meet you. I've never actually suffered this side effect
myself when I used to be on topamax, as it was always combined with my
other meds, but I found this lot for you on my google.

Hope they help

Pete,
My little girl was on Topamax for almost a year when the professionals
were ready to label her as "failure to thrive" because she was not
gaining weight, not getting taller, and just not reacting very well to
life (she was on it from age 1 to 2). It also affected her ability to
sweat. In fact, we spent all of last summer inside because she COULD
NOT sweat.
Our neurologist has said anyone can have any reaction to any
medication- not always labelled as a side effect.

Your daughter's condition doesn't sound like epilepsy at all, so it seems
to me that she has been given the wrong medication for whatever she
really does have! Her sweat-glands failing to work properly, and her
complete stunted kind of body growth that you've sort of described seems
to me that her entire body is shutting down on her gradually.

Maybe you ought to get a second opinion from a better doctor, have a few
more tests done on her and have her meds changed perhaps!

whoa. I tend to agree. I was on topamax for supposed migraines and had some
very painful side effects.
I did sweat, but I lost a lot of weight. Not only that I had horrible
stomach pain from ribs to hips. so it might be a reaction to the medication.
Look it up on wikipedia.
