Topamax and nosebleeds

Hi Group,

Checking back in with my usual load of questions. ;-)

Cody just had his second video EEG, which was more fruitful than the one
last year.  He is going into "Phase 2" with invasive monitoring, hopefully.
(waiting for confirmation from the neurosurgical team)

In the meantime, they've added Topamax to his Keppra.  He's had 2 nosebleeds
in the past 24 hours, and I looked it up online. Seems to be a side effect
which is more common in kids, but still listed as uncommon.

Has anyone here experienced this?  Will it go away?  Is it something I need
to call the doctor about tomorrow, or just wait until he calls me this week
about the next step in monitoring?

Thanks !

Have been using Topamax (Topimax) for 3 months now and have been exp. only
one nosebleed during
the period (age 40).  It happened during sleep and as far as the blood track
on the pillow showed
it was quite hefty.  Otherwise no problems with noosebleeding.
Regards.
Pete.

Thanks, Pete,

I was FINALLY able to talk with my son's doctor today after 2 weeks of
waiting. (A whole other story)

He had never heard of nosebleeds being associated with Topamax use.  I told
him that the Topamax website as well as the PDR listed it as a side effect
that is more common in kids/adolescents.  He said "Really?? I have never
heard this before."

I said, "Doc, you are learning something from me."

He replied, "You know, sometimes I think moms and dads know more than
doctors do. We should just listen to you."

Wow..... someone gets it. ;-)

I think it must be just children though - I turned 41 earlier this month,
and I was on Topamax for several years with absolutely no side effects
whatsoever approx two years ago.

My neuro' just decided he wanted to try something new to try to rid of my
Partials, Complex Partials, and Tonics as well as just my Tonic-Clonic's,
so he took me off Topamax and put me on Keppra, which seems to be giving
me more side effects than I had before - but I'm being weened off that too
now!

If this med' is giving your kid nosebleed, you know that you must consult
your neuro'/paediatrician to change it to a milder med perhaps, as it
sounds much too strong for his body to handle. Maybe when he gets older
though it might be prescribed to him again.

I remember when I was a child though, I was first given Epilim, by my
Paediatrician, followed combined with Phenytoin in my teens a few years
later and wasn't offered Topamax till I was in my mid-thirties, but I
guess it all depends on the type/s of seizures we have, which meds our
doctors give us eh?

What's so frustrating is that we have tried just about everything else. He
had a bad reaction to Lamictal. He's on the maximum adult dose of Keppra and
continues to have 4-6 seizures a month.  I've taken him off the Topamax, and
no more nosebleeds, but he had 2 seizures this week. So I guess I will start
it back very slowly and hope he can tolerate it.

Thanks, Sofia, for the info.

Glad to hear you actually discovered the cause of your sons nosebleeds -
sometimes it takes a little time to discover which medication is the
actual culprit if he's taking several at once!

I actually heard the maximum adult dose of Keppra was something like
4000mg, though it sounds extraordinarily high for a child!
I was only on 1500mg twice daily but my neuro' halved it as he's trying
to ween me off it, so now I'm on 750mg twice daily, but I also take 800mg
Tegretol Retard twice daily, and 150mg Zonisamide twice daily too.

Anyway nice to hear his nosebleeds are getting better - hope it works out
for him

Thanks, Sofia.

He is taking 4000 mg Keppra/day.  He takes 2 gms in the morning and 2 gms in
the evening.   He started back on the Topamax Friday... we'll see if the
nosebleeds come back.
