issa - 27 Jan 2007 21:45 GMT > is keppra helping u ?? depending on what newsreader you are using, try a search for "keppra" in the subject field (as it is done in thunderbird). most of the threads seem to be discussing its side-effects, but quite a few also deal with personal experiences. hope this helps.
cheers, issa

G. - 28 Jan 2007 03:45 GMT It's an international group so can take up to 2? days before the timezones of people who might use it have read your request. In the meantime you could use either google or another search option if you have one to search e.g. for keppra& epilepsy&2006, or try seizures (without the year) to see what messages it might bring up for last year (don't put the blank spaces in above search). There are a couple of people who use keppra, but haven't replied yet. What did you want to know about it? If you post that, they might give a fuller response when they see your message.
I don't use keppra, but am 6 hours behind you-- west North America is another 3 hours, Australia and New Zealand, another 6? hours. So although it's an Online Group, time differences will also take time to get answers to your questions. Depending on the Group you read, a weekend is not necessarily the most active time on some groups. (Keppra has been discussed several times over past ~5 years, so a Google search for Keppra and what you were looking for-- side effects? or experiences? or even wrt. what you wanted on This group, would have got you some replies by now.) I think that's why the earlier poster suggested a group search while you wait for replies from people who've used it. First thing they'll ask is likely 'what do you want to know'? Also although most of the Search Engines might pull in "5000 Answers", depending how you set up the Search, the Program will try to **sort what it finds from Most Likely (it thinks) to help you, to Least likely. So the first e.g. 20 hits will be all that will be of interest to you. G./ some answers by now.) G./

good luck, issa
flopper - 28 Jan 2007 14:54 GMT I've been on it since 03'. Currently taking 3000mg w/ dilantin. The best to control me since 91' & I've tried many. So the answer is "yes".
> is keppra helping u ?? howdydave - 28 Jan 2007 17:54 GMT I am currently taking keppra, triliptal and have a Vagus Nerve Stimulator. I have better control now than I've ever had.
Everybody is different! Just because it works for one person has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it will work for you.

I've been using it for nearly 2 years now with Tegretol Retard, and it's done absolutely nothing for me, which is why my neuro's has recently decided to ween me of it slowly, and try and put up the third med' I'm on, Zonisamide, and see if that might help me - there's no doubt about it, we're just all different!

George Lewycky - 02 Feb 2007 03:26 GMT Last year I was diagnosed with baffling liver problems and my docs wanted me switched to more liver save medications back in June/ July........Thats is how I got taking Keppra 3x day.......I also think the Depakote wasnt working anymore even though it tasted better than Keppra!!!!!
Also my live functions improved tremendously
I also take Tegretol 6 tabs 3x day and it seems to be working depending on my stress, sleep and anxiety
finding medicines that work best isnt an exact science nor is it easy with more to choose from than years ago.. Also females have it worse with the menstrual cycle capable of triggering seizures...i know a girl who had brain surgery and had 10+ seizures daily and now its just 1 per month and thats the reason

TuniaBJC - 29 Jan 2007 12:31 GMT Ive been on it only a few months now and had found somethings got worse . As along with the Keppra I'm also taking Lamitcal, and Carbatral which doesnt make any sense. As Carbatral doesnt work with either of the othe two drugs. In fact Carbatral decreases the effectiveness of the others. So almost immediately my dr. increases my dosage to over 2000mgs of the keppra, without touching Cabatral , and then increasing the Lamictal. Only to have to decrease the lamictal again. The first week I went on the keppra my balance and functioning levels decreased. since the dr wouldnt listen or just didnt want to believe me. I decreased the keppra by 500 mgs after a week of no help. I began taking just 1000mgs in the am, then 500mgs at night. Then evened it out to 750mgs, in am and 750mgs in pm , Th dr was very angry about it, BUT this is my body not his. He wants me to resume what he had originally perscribed, but I cant , He finally agreed to decreased my carbatrol . I'd been on the same dosages and the smae drugs especially carbamezipine / tegretol then carbatral , most of my life. As I found quite a few drs doint believe that the same drug works differently in each individual, that it can work for some and not for others. So the past few drs I've had said I was already taking the maximum dosages of those drugs. YET I still wasnt doing well. They arent very smart for having a degree. As the body gets used to drugs and then needs to have them adjusted. This one now isnt much better , they cant think outside the box to see the person that has the problem if they cant lump us all together then they dont know what to do. Nor do they want to lkearn., I'd like to finally see some good results from this keppra, Although I wont get my hopes to high at this point. As it's not just the drugs inteacxtion with me, but also the triggers that bring on big problems for me. Like fake sugar, extreme heat or cold, inclines, over exertion. Things along that line, that can hinder my health as well as the drugs strengths,
Hope keppra is working well for most of you taking it.
> is keppra helping u ?? Julie - 29 Jan 2007 18:38 GMT > is keppra helping u ?? Hi gang, wow it has been a long time since I have checked in. Google groups even has a different look.
I have had a very good experience with keppra. I have been on it, slowly going off phenobarbital, for a little over a year. This month has been a good test. I went on a road trip from Idaho to Arizona. One thing that happened was lack of sleep. Two days in a row I got up at 5am. When we reached our destination, Phoenix, I was riding in a car with my friend (who also happens to have epilepsy). I realized I was having some mild simple partial seizures (funny feeling in my stomach). I hadn't had this for years. So when we got back to her house she took great care of me. Got me out of the noise of the family and had me rest. That evening when I went to take my medication I realized that I had forgotten my morning meds. That would explain the problem - lack of sleep, tired from traveling, and skipped my meds. The good news - it didn't progress to a tonic clonic seizure and the next day I was fine.
The stomach flu was going around and her children had a case of vomiting & fever that lasted a day. A few days later I came down with the stomach flu. This was a bit frightening to me because the last time I vomited (probably 15 years ago) I had a really bad tonic clonic seizure and ended up on the bathroom floor, and woke up with my head wedged between the toilet and the wall. You can understand my fear. This bathroom had tile floor and very little space. Anyway my friend was there for me again. She put me in her bed and told me to call her if I felt like I was going to throw up. She prepared a trash can. When I did get sick, she was beside me. That time went OK, I didn't feel a seizure coming on, so the second time I had to throw up I felt confident enough to use the toilet. YES! I did it and no seizure. My friend again helped me by telling me to breath slowly, she was concerned that I was hyperventilating. That was good insight on her part.
Here I was in Arizona, I traveled all that way to see the Fiesta Bowl (college football). And I got sick the day of the game. It turned out to be the game of the century. http://www.inet-success.com/ FiestaBowl/
Was I upset that I spent all that money and didn't get to see it in person? No, I was excited that keppra worked for me.
Take care, Julie
p - 11 Feb 2007 21:36 GMT I know Keppra is really meant to be taken along with other drugs. I don't have too many seizures, and I wasn't taking anything at all. The doc said sooner or later I was going to fall and break my neck. He said to try Keppra. I took 2000 mg/day and had a seizure. Then the doc increased it to 2500 mg/day. I went on a long trip, and I was fine. I flew business class, and got a lot of sleep. I resisted the urge to explore the city's night life. When I got back home, there was a heat wave, and I had a seizure. The doc said I could take more Keppra, but I said the hell with it, it's too expensive. Now I'm taking Lamictal, so far so good. If you're only going to take one drug, Lamictal is a better choice than Keppra.
>> is keppra helping u ?? > [quoted text clipped - 42 lines] > Take care, > Julie Rudy - 13 Feb 2007 05:12 GMT > is keppra helping u ?? Yep. I've been taking it 3 years now as a supplement to Lamictal. Without it, I had 1 or 2 (simple-partial) seizures a week. With Keppra, it's kind of streaky. I go a couple months, and then get 1 or 2 in as many days. I'm not experiencing any brain-mush from it. Hope that helps.
