I'll try to keep this short. I took 2000 mg/day of Keppra, but I had a
seizure. Then I took 2500 mg/day and had another seizure. Luckily I only
have one seizure about every 6 months, but the doc says sooner or later I'm
going to fall down a flight of steps and break my neck, so I need to get
them under control.
My doc said a higher dose of Keppra might still work, but I told him Keppra
was too expensive. Therefor he said try Lamictal. I know Lamictal has a
better track record when used as your only drug.
The biggest side effect of Keppra was the price ! Otherwise, it made me
sleepy, so I went to bed early. I have no other complaints about Keppra, I'm
just sorry it didn't work.
How is Lamictal ???????

I've been slowly switching from Depokote to Lamictal. Because I'm on
Depakote the switch over is very slow as those taking valproic acid or
divalproex sodium have the greatest chance of delvoping the rash side
effect. For most people the chance is 1 in 1000 but for those taking
vaproic acid the chance increases to two or three in 1000. I love
Lamictal so far, but it has taken me since August 26 to get up to my
current dose of 500 m.g. per day. The doctor gave me a starter kit
which indicates that for those on: carbamazepine, phenytoin,
phenobarbital, primidone or rifampin, that those patients can switch
over at a much faster rate. I've had zero side effects so far and my
target dose is 600 m.g. a day so I'm almost there. I'll be on it as
monotherapy once I'm totally off the Depakote which should be December
31st. I don't know anything about Keppra, so I can't comment about it.
>From my personal experience,
I would recommend trying out Lamictal. Best of luck to you, and may the
new year greet you with zero seizures.
Jim
P.S.=> The price with my insurance charges for Lamictal is between
what I would get charged for a generic drug and a nonpreferred
medication, so I would think the price shouldn't be too bad even if you
have to private pay for it.

600 mg of Lamictal sounds like a lot. My doctor said I should try 400, and
I'm a big guy. This web site http://www.crazymeds.org/
says if Lamictal is your only med, the range is 300-500 mg/day.
thanks and good luck... check out that web site, it's very good

I didn't have total control at 400 m.g. so the doctor raised me to 500
m.g. per day, and now I have total control. He told me to feel free to
go up to 600 m.g. if I needed it during the Holidays to make it
through, and gave me plenty of medication. The Glaxo Smith Kline web
site says that some patients may require up to 700 m.g. a day for total
control, but that doses above that have not proven to be effective.
Most of it is determined by the patients body weight and since I tip
the scales at 230 lbs. it will take a higher dose of medication. I've
always been stuck taking a higher dose of most medications because of
my height and corresponding body weight. Good luck at 400 because it's
generally better for your body to get by with the lowest effective
dose, but only your doctor can work out the risk-benefit of the dose he
or she decides is best for you. I hope 400 works for you, so you don't
have to punish your body with a higher dose! Happy Holidays and good
luck for the New Year.

I take 225mg of Lamictal && 500mg of Keppra (supplement) twice a day.
I can't even tell I'm on the stuff... it's awesome. I've taken
Dilantin, and then Topamax.
Both didn't work, and both left me with cobwebs in my head.
I wish you the best.
