Hi y'all

My 15 yr old son was diagnosed with Juvenile Myclonic epilepsy 3 years ago and
was prescribed Epilim. He was fairly stable for all that time until he insisted
that he wanted to start coming off the drug. He did have absenses however
throughout the time he was taking the prescribed dose. He gardually came down
from 2000mg to 1000mg over the course of four weeks. Then the grand mals
started. They were fairly random to begin with but have seemed to settle down
(poor turn of phrase for such a thing I know!) to one 1.5 hrs after waking and
then one every 6 hours or so.

Can any one tell me why they seem to have settled ? is this good or bad ? Our
family doctor has increased his dose (last Thurs) to 2500mg but as yet it
doesn't seem to have kicked in. He's really upset by the whole thing and trying
to see his consultant is like trying to knit fog.

I would appreciate any help or advice.

Thanks

Simon

I am on Tegretol retard 1200 a day, frisium 10 a day and lamortigint 150 a
day.  When my neurologist suggested reducing the tegretol he said to reuce
it by 100mg for 5 weeks then reduce it another 100mg again for 4 or 5 weeks.
He said otherwise it was too big a drop in the drug.  I am 32 and had been
on that combination seizure free for 13 years.

I dont care about what tablets i have to take as long as they are safe and
keep me more or less seizure free.

Hope this helps

G'day simon,
maybe monotherapy isn't working and you may have to consider a second drug.
i found that when i took epilim that it controlled grand mal seizures well
but wasn't really effective for complex partials or absence seizures and so
the neuro recommended a second drug which helped in lowering the frequency
of the other type seizures.
