Hello group just heard back from my doctor. He said that he was going to
change my medication to (Depakote). I looked it up and I found out that
it had some serious side effects one that really got me was the one that
said it could cause serious to fatal liver damage and also serious
pancreas damage. I'm seriously considering staying on Dilantin and
dealing with the headaches. I called my doctors office back up and they
told me not to worry about what I read because all seizure medications
has side effects which I pretty much figured out on my own. Well any
input that you have would greatly be appreciated group. Once again
thanks very much.

Hi.  I'm no Doctor either (you know), but most of the medications
have *some potential side effects.   My Tegretol has that with note to
tell all Drs. and Dentists I use it etc... My Dentist told me Teg. can
rob calcium so bones, etc, and it shows up first with Dental checkups,
so he changed mine (in 1998) to each 4 months.
Unless others have specific info. with your's (Depakote),  I agree w.
the other poster that Everything will have a warning if *someone has
had symptoms-- the Dr. (or even your Pharmacy) might be able to tell
you % chances-- most you'll find are low (under 5-10%).  G.

There are people around here who do (use it).  Check the messages
over 3-4 days, as lots of people only look in 3-4x a week, and might
not have seen your initial post yet.
And if you go ahead, don't forget to give a status report as lots of
others read here for experiences and ideas on what might help them too.
  Cheers.   G./

In addition to the current responses you get, you can also search the archived
postings for the group. Go to:
http://groups-beta.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

Then fill in 2 fields for starters:
Group - alt.support.epilepsy
Find messages with all of the words - depakote

Then note that you have 2 sorting options to try out. Lots of material to look
at there in regard to depakote.

They are required to list all potential side effects by law.  Even if one
person caught the flu during the trials, they have to put that in their
statistics.  If one person commited suicide/died of a heart attack/etc.,
they have to put it that someone "died".  That doesn't mean that all side
effects are fake or unrelated -- you can look the statistics up.
Dilantin has been around a long time.  Doctors tend to try that as a first
go for seizure treatment before trying other, newer medications.

I've been taking Depakote ER (the extended release tablet), same
formula, since May 2002. It has been one of the best medications I've
ever taken. The extended release tab gives you great coverage and you
really don't have to worry about a seizure if you miss one dose as long
as you remember and take your following dose on time. I'm not sure if
that would hold true for the regular Depakote or the generic. I'd give
Depakote a try and if it doesn't work for you or you don't like any
side effects you may have you can always switch to something else with
your doctors approval of course. Good Luck,
Jim
