Howdy!

I almost got arrested once for shoplifting...

I was in a store and had a seizure.
Apparantly I took a little jar of baby food,
stuck it in my pocket and walked out the
door. (I'm a bachelor.)

If you live in the USA, I would strongly suggest
that you have a talk with somebody at your
local chapter of the ACLU.

I got on a bus once in mid-seizure when some people stopped me to ask
for directions. The driver didn't know it was a seizure.  I needed a
letter from my 2 Doctors and the case (Transportation Fraud = not
paying), was thrown out of court.   G./

BTW: For those who don't live in the USA...

The ACLU is The American Civil Liberties Union.

Lots of people think that they are a real pain in the arse
but they love to sink their teeth into situations that fall
between the cracks. They helped me out one time and
I've been a member ever since!

It really bugs me that the right-wing anti-ACLU propaganda
has been so effective that many people dislike it and believe
it is "evil", not understanding that the *ONLY* function of the
ACLU is to step in when our Bill of Rights is being stepped
on - and to argue (often for free) in defense of those who may
be unpopular but whose rights under our constitution are being
attacked. It is easy to defend the popular, but the ACLU also
defends the unpopular and works to maintain our constitutional
rights. Even with a meager income, I have supported this
important institution for many years...

BTW, I wonder if that right-wing radio windbag Rush Limbaugh
ever thanked the ACLU after they defended him against illegal
searches (the ACLU had often been regularly attacked by him
on his show, stupidly and cavalierly, I gather...).

I wear a bracelet identifying the fact that I am epileptic and have a VNS
device, not for the paramedics, but for law enforcement.  I don't trust cops
farther than they can throw me, hyuk, hyuk.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you... a VNS is a pacemaker-like device
attached to the "Vagus nerve".  It sends little electric stimuli to this one
nerve at regular intervals, with the hopes of lowering seizure frequency.
So far, all I can say is that I may be sleeping better.  I haven't had the
implant in long enough to have noticed a change in my epilepsy... but I only
had my seizures about once a month, and the device isn't at full capacity
yet, so it's too early to tell.  I do have to be cautious now about airport
screeners and CAT/MRI scans because of the device...  and especially police
TASERS, of course.
When I went to Las Vegas last month, I just got a pat down in the airport
instead of going through the screener.  No big deal.  I brought a doctor's
note... but they didn't need that.  I just went into the line with all the
other people needing special medical attention.
The surgery for me was no big deal... if it weren't for the fact that it was
a general anesthesia, I would have walked out of there much faster, but they
had to follow protocols.  I scarfed down my muffin very quickly after the
surgery.  I have a very small scar on my neck and another on my chest, from
the surgery, both about 3 inches long.  If I puff my chest out really far,
you can see a faint ring of the device on the left side of my chest...
kinda weird.

It had been a good five years since the doctors found out about my epilepsy
and first started with Dilantin.  It was pretty obvious for us that we had
to start thinking about something else when the neurologist started writing
that my epilepsy was "Intractable" on my receipt.
If this device goes well, we -may- slowly work off of the Dilantin.  I'll
probably be on at least one medication (Topamax and some Dilantin, depending
on how well this device works) for the rest of my life.
