Dilantin -is- excreted through urine, although I don't know of it showing up
on drug tests.

The body has various methods by which it breaks down the various meds into other
chemical compounds and eliminates them from the body. It's a byproduct of the
breakdown process of Dilantin/phenytoin that shows up in the urine and triggers
a positive on the drug tests, not Dilantin/phenytoin itself.

What info? You didn't quote any part of what I said, so I can't tell what you're
referring to. Is that a limitation of WebTV? I'm not familiar with WebTV, but
almost all programs automatically quote the message that you're responding to
and have it sitting there ready for you to add your reply to. Let me know and
I'll figure it out if that program doesn't let you quote.

:)  That comes from a couple of places. My favorite website for prescription
drug information is http://rxlist.com Plug in Dilantin and then select phenytoin
sodium by "Generic Name" on the left. Then on the next screen select the
Clinical Pharmacology tab. There it describes the metabolism process: "Most of
the drug is excreted in the bile as inactive metabolites which are then
reabsorbed from the intestinal tract and excreted in the urine.".

Then from the website on drug testing at http://www.drugtestinfo.com/faq.htm the
offending metabolite is identified: "Will Dilantin or Phenobarbital cause a
positive test for barbiturates? . . . Phenytoin (Dilantin) is not a barbiturate;
however a metabolite, p-hydroxyphenytoin has minimal cross reactivity on the
initial screening test. There is no interference on the confirmatory GC/MS test,
therefore, Dilantin (Phenytoin) has no effect on the eventual result for
barbiturates.". As it states there, there are 2 tests: initial and confirmatory.
The confirmatory GC/MS test needs to be run by a lab if there is a false positive.
