IDON'T WANT THIS HAPPENING AGAIN

DISTRAUGHT mum Jean Murphy is this week fighting for justice after her
epileptic daughter's death.

She is campaigning to prevent other youngsters suffering the same fate
as 15-year-old Kayleigh Macilwraith-Christie.

As the Gazette has revealed, Kayleigh had to wait at least 30 minutes
for an ambulance - which turned up with no paramedic on board.

The crew of emergency medical technicians could not administer the
potentially life-saving muscle relaxant.

Kayleigh's family said she did not get vital drugs until she reached
hospital at least 45 minutes after she started fitting.

But the London Ambulance Service, which is carrying out an
investigation, employs 1,665 emergency medical technicians and only 825
paramedics - and says it is normal for ambulances to have
technician-only crews.

Ms Murphy, 46, who lives on the Market Estate off North Road, Holloway,
has started a petition to get paramedics on all London ambulances.

She said: "Everybody I've spoken to, including the doctor's surgery,
assumes there's a paramedic on board every ambulance.

"My daughter's life was lost because there wasn't. I don't want
anything like this happening again.

"Paramedics themselves are telling me to do this. They are saying that
the situation is dangerous."

Ms Murphy, who got about 300 signatures in the first two days alone,
wants to get at least 7,000 in the hope that it will be discussed in
parliament.

Her campaign is being backed by the Market Estate Tenants and
Residents' Association.

Chairwoman Sharon Jobe said: "We will back Jean. We don't want another
child dying."

Pressure group London Health Emergency has also expressed its support.

Head of campaigns Geoff Martin said: "Ambulances should be fully
equipped with the equipment and staff to deal with all eventualities.
It's logical commonsense, particularly bearing in mind the pressure on
accident and emergency departments."

Do you wear a Medic Alert Bracelet?  (I don't know if these are used
as much in the UK). If you had one, since you're in the US?, the EMS
would have been able to see from your M.Alert record which meds. you
use and what conditions you have, as you're in the ambulance or still
where you had the szr.   Several other disorders (including some types
of illegal drugs) can produce similar symptoms to a CP seizure and
other Szr. types.
For $40. approx. you can prevent them mis-diagnosing your condition
on way to hospital.  They can't read minds, and if they have no reason
to know you are seizing can treat it as e.g. a heart attack or stroke
if it looks more like that.
(The child's condition, on this thread you posted this, could be
from different source or circumstances, than your's you added on this
thread.)    G./

If you're in the U.S. Medic Alert are in the phone book.  They can
either mail you the forms or might have a web link if you wanted to
order online, or *print the order form.
They need to know your Blood Type for the bracelet, wallet card and
file, plus up to 3 Doctor's names with phone numbers (reg.+emerg.), and
Family contacts with phone numbers (for their file).
They also keep a file of all medications you use (not doses as those
can change), so Emerg. etc. Doctors don't give you anything that would
conflict with what you use. Those are the types of things another Dr.
can get by phoning their Emerg. number collect from anywhere in the
world.   At $35. one time and up (depending which bracelet you choose),
it can be pretty cheap insurance to make sure they don't use a
treatment that would conflict with any of the Anti Ep Medications, if
you were unconscious.  (Naturally other medical conditions that apply
beyond 'seizure disorder', can be listed on the bracelet and file too.

I am a member of the medic alert foundation...I wear a bracelet made of
titanium with my medical info on the back of it...I was diagnosed with
heart disease in the year 1999..I picked up a form from a local
Walgrens..filled it out..mailed it..I was later contacted by a medic
alert rep that asked me for all of my medical information. prescription
meds, including any otc's that i was told to take (i.e) aspirin,
coenzyme Q10, and vitamin E..this was priinted on a credit card type
version for me to carry in my purse in addition to wearing the
bracelet..
They are only about $40.00 but worth their weight in gold!..If you join
medic alert..they will ask for a small donation at the end of each year
to maintain your current medical information..a small price
to pay when you can't speak for yourself!
So guys, if you dont wear one..please get one!
Thanks for letting me add my comments!
