Hi Group,

Some of you may remember me from posting earlier this year. I have a
(now) 15 year old son who has had seizures since age 8.  He has complex
partials, simple partials, absence and grand mal seizures. He was
evaluated earlier this year at MCG in Augusta for temporal lobe
surgery, but was not felt to be a good surgical candidate.

He has now gotten worse with 2 grand mals in the past 2 months, along
with at least once a week complex partial activity.  He was started on
Lamictal 10 days ago, added to the Keppra he was already taking.  We
were warned about the rash...

tonight, he came to me with an eye hemorrhage (subconjunctival for any
medical types) over half his left eye. There is no pain, burning,
visual disturbance, etc.  He has typical adolescent acne, so it's
difficult to tell if there is a skin rash, but he has a hugely swollen
lymph node on his shoulder blade.

Of course I will be calling the neuro 1st thing tomorrow, but wondered
if anyone else who has experienced lamictal problems had anything like
this.  I am definitely not giving the lamictal until I have talked to
the doctor tomorrow.

Thanks for listening, and for any advice, help.

Holly

Hi Holly,
The swollen lymph node(lymphadenopathy) is a symptom of a reaction to
the Lamictal.  That was my reaction and I was taken off it immediately.

Ive copied the relevant passage from
http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/lamotrigine_wcp.htm

"Prior to initiation of treatment with LAMICTAL, the patient should be
instructed that a rash or other signs or symptoms of hypersensitivity
(e.g., fever, lymphadenopathy) may herald a serious medical event and
that the patient should report any such occurrence to a physician
immediately."

Thanks, Liz.  I was able to talk to our doc's nurse practicioner and
she told me the same thing.  I am home with him now watching for the
rash.  It's so nerve-wracking, now waiting for the rash, waiting for a
seizure.  I am a nurse and know FAR too much.  I just wish I could be
completely ignorant for a day or so.

Thanks for your quick response.

Here's hoping that all has gone well with your son's condition. The time I got
my own reaction to Lamictal, the doctor not only stopped it immediately, but
also put me on prednisone for some time. I assume that must be fairly standard
treatment to counteract the reaction.

He is much better today. The lymph glands are still huge, but his eyes
have gone back to their normal color.  Now I am just stressed out
waiting for the seizure because he is very sensitive to changes in meds
and drops in the levels.

Thanks for the info and for the good thoughts.

Holly
