I remember that Julie was tapering off of Phenobarbital painfully
slowly and going on Keppra because it was highly recommended by her
doctor. How are you making out? I ask because I had total seizure
control on phenobarbital, but when I asked my neurologist about Keppra
in August he said he reserves it for the most difficult cases because
of the strange and difficult side effects which it can precipitate. Did
you have control when taking phenobarbital? I really trust my
neurologist, but with only a year or so before retiring, I think he's
kind of set in his ways and maybe not as progressive as a younger
doctor might be. I would appreciate anyones input or experiences.
Thanks,
Jim

I've never taken phenobarbital but I was put on Keppra when Lamictal quit
working for me. Keppra made me damned near crazy. It made every cognitive
symptom worse by a factor of 500. I couldn't think, couldn't make decisions,
couldn't follow a conversation, couldn't read a magazine. It got so bad that
one day I was driving on the freeway next to an 18wheeler and was thinking
how easy it would be to flick my steering wheel to the left a little and be
done with it all. A day or two later I had a conference with my doctor and
my husband where I asked them to take the guns out of the house or hide them
where I couldn't find them. It was that bad. First time I've ever considered
killing myself. About two weeks after I got off Keppra all the side effects
went away. This is just my experience - many people take it and it's
wonderful for them. As with all AED's, it's different for everyone I think.

My wife, who had some control on Dilantin, lost it when she switched
to Keppra. She is now switching over to Trileptal. The Keppra also
caused crying jags, muscle pain, and nausea.
