I was diagnosed with a low grade tumor in my left frontal-temperal lobes in
July after suffering a grand mal seizure with no previous history. Now I
get strong tingling down my right side as an aura and can't tell whether
this is muscle spasms or not. Is there a guideline for distinguishing
between the two?
On a different topic, I saw the thread on Dilantin and am equally concerned
about its side effects. They have me on 400mg per day and every week some
new sensation arises making me wonder which is worse (tumor or anti-seizure
drug). Anyone on this group had a "good" long term experience with this
drug?

What would be considered a "good" long term experience. I've been on
Dilantin for the most part of 10 years (with a short "bad" experience
on tegretol). I'm starting to get concerned about the long term
possible side effects, as well as it losing its efficacy.
On the "good" side, I haven't had a grand mal, but the SP's seem to be
increasing.

Be sure to talk with your neurologist about possible alternatives
to Dilantin. There are some newer AEDs on the market that have
worked well for many. Since I don't know your seizures types
(you mentioned grand mal and auras), but Keppra, Lamictal and
Topamax might be worth mentioning.
Good luck!

Howdy BillX!
re: tingling v. spasm
Tingling is a sensation.
A spasm involves some sort of motion caused by an involuntary muscle
contraction.

Howdy AGAIN!
Now that I think about it, the muscle contraction doesn't necessarily have
to result in motion. Could just be a quick muscle flex.
